Abstract

The invention is directed to a guidewire having a distal flexible member, such as a helical coil, which is formed with at least one highly radiopaque component and at least one high strength component. In a presently preferred embodiment, the highly radiopaque component is at least 10% and less than about 60% of the transverse cross-section of the flexible member, preferably at least 20% but less than 40%. The highly radiopaque component may be formed of radiopaque material such as platinum, gold, iridium and the like and the high strength component may be formed of a material such as tantalum, stainless steel, NiTi alloys, Co—Cr—Mo alloys and the like.

Claims (19)

1. A process for providing a flexible body for an intracorporeal device, comprising:

at least partially helically coiling a wire to form the flexible body, wherein the wire has a high strength interior core, and a highly radiopaque cladding that is at least about 20% but not more than about 40% of a cross-sectional area of the wire.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the materials for the cladding and the interior core are reversed.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the high strength interior core includes a material selected from the group consisting of nickel-titanium, Co—Cr—Mo, tantalum, tungsten, and alloys thereof.

4. The process of claim 1 , further comprising joining the flexible body to a second flexible body.

5. The process of claim 4 , wherein the second flexible body is formed by co-drawing a wire having an exterior of a first radiopacity and a high strength interior of a second radiopacity, wherein the first radiopacity is greater than the second radiopacity.

6. A method of fabricating a guidewire, comprising:

coiling a wire to form a flexible body, wherein the wire includes an interior core and a radiopaque cladding that is about 20% to no more than about 40% of a cross-sectional area of the wire; and

disposing the flexible body about a core member.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the flexible body is formed by co-drawing the wire comprising an exterior of a first radiopacity and a core of a second radiopacity, wherein the first radiopacity is greater than the second radiopacity.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the radiopaque cladding is deposited onto the interior core.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the radiopaque cladding is deposited onto the interior core by at least one of electroplating, plasma spraying, or physical vapor deposition.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising joining the flexible body to the core member.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein joining the flexible body to the core member comprises at least one of soldering, brazing, welding, or adhesively joining the flexible body to the core member.

12. The method of claim 6 , wherein the interior core includes at least one material selected from the group consisting of nickel-titanium, Co—Cr—Mo, tantalum, tungsten, and alloys thereof, and wherein the radiopaque cladding includes at least one material selected from the group consisting of platinum, gold, iridium, palladium, tantalum, tungsten, silver, and alloys thereof.

13. A method of fabricating a guidewire, comprising:

coiling a wire to form a flexible body, wherein the wire includes an interior core and a radiopaque cladding that is about 10% to no more than 60% of a cross-sectional area of the wire; and

disposing the flexible body about a core member;

wherein the flexible body exhibits substantially a same radiopacity as platinum-based wire made from 90 weight % platinum and 10 weight % iridium and having the same thickness as the flexible body.
