Abstract

An implant for use in spinal surgery comprises a resilient element having an inflatable cavity. It is formed of a biologically compatible material and is arranged for placement between end plates of adjacent vertebra. The implant may also include a wound disc replacement element. A method of performing spinal surgery on a patient comprises securely mounting a patient onto a patient support table; imaging a spinal region of the patient; building up a three-dimensional image file of the spinal region of the patient; storing the image file; and utilizing the image file for planning and carrying out computer controlled spinal surgery on the patient utilizing the implant. A computer-controlled surgical implant system comprises a steerable endosurgical implanting assembly operative to install the implant at a desired location in a patient; and a computerized controlled, which operates the steerable endosurgical implanting assembly.

Claims (16)

1. An implant for restoring a height within a space between adjacent superior and inferior vertebrae of a spine, comprising:

an expandable outer surface component formed of a biologically compatible material defining an inner fillable cavity, the outer surface component being expandable from a first configuration to a second expanded configuration when the inner cavity is filled with a filling material, the outer surface component having slightly curved generally planar upper and lower surfaces, said surfaces having an edge, and said surfaces joined circumferentially by the edge to an intermediate edge surface to form a generally bean-shaped implant when expanded in the second configuration,

wherein the upper and lower surfaces of the implant in the second configuration are shaped and sized to be located entirely within the space between the adjacent superior and inferior vertebrae, and wherein the space extends from a recess surgically created in an inferior surface of the superior vertebra to a recess surgically created in a superior surface of the inferior vertebra,

wherein the intermediate edge surface includes a plurality of multi-coil spiral outwardly extending ribs and further comprising a lead coiled between adjacent ribs.

2. The implant of claim 1 wherein said outer surface component is formed of an elastomer.

3. The implant of claim 2 , wherein the elastomer is polyurethane.

4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface component includes a port formed in a surface thereof for filling the inner cavity with the filling material.

5. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the port is configured for receiving a distal end of an inflation tool for filling the inner cavity.

6. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the port is configured to extend outside the endplates of the adjacent vertebrae for receiving the filling material.

7. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the filling material is a fluid.

8. The implant of claim 1 , wherein said implant is configured for insertion between the adjacent vertebrae via a lateral approach to the spine.

9. The implant of claim 1 , further comprising a lip on the ribs.

10. The implant of claim 1 , further comprising a protrusion on the ribs.

11. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the ribs are different widths.

12. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the ribs are continuous and generally uniform width.

13. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the ribs are discontinuous.
