Abstract

A form of neuromodulation is conveyed from an external source to an interior of the skull to modulate neural activity. One or more apertures are formed through or partially through the skull to provide an interface for neuromodulation delivery. Parameters of one or more states of the brain may be sensed through an interface formed with one or more apertures extending all or part of the way through the skull. A device provides an interface between the exterior of the skull and the brain that includes a channel of a length sufficient to traverse the entire thickness of the skull or at least a part of the thickness of the skull. The channels may be configured for ion conduction of electrical signals, enabling DC or near DC stimulation of target neurons.

Claims (24)

1. A method for providing an interface through the skull to the brain of a human subject, comprising:

providing a transcranial channel having a length sufficient to traverse at least a portion of the thickness of the skull, a proximal end intended to be oriented towards the outer surface of the skull and a distal end intended to be oriented towards the inner surface of the skull, wherein the transcranial channel is configured to receive an ion-permeable substance for ionically conducting electrical current through the transcranial channel;

providing a transparenchymal channel having a distal end configured to be positioned in brain parenchyma or into a sulcus of the brain, wherein the transparenchymal channel is configured to receive an ion-permeable substance for ionically conducting electrical current through the transparenchymal channel;

forming an aperture in the skull beneath the scalp, that approximates the outer dimensions of the transcranial channel;

implanting the transparenchymal channel to place the distal end in brain parenchyma or into a sulcus of the brain;

inserting the transcranial channel into the aperture;

covering the proximal end of the transcranial channel with the scalp; and

providing equipment at the exterior of the scalp, in the vicinity of the proximal end of the transcranial channel for facilitating one of wireless delivery of electrical current into and through the scalp, through the transcranial channel, and through the transparenchymal channel to a target area of the brain, or acquisition of a signal corresponding to at least one parameter sensed from the target area of the brain, the signal acquired by electrical conduction through the transparenchymal channel, through the transcranial channel, and through the scalp.

2. The method of claim 1 , where the transcranial channel and the transparenchymal channel are provided as a single unit.

3. The method of claim 1 , where the transcranial channel and the transparenchymal channel are provided as separate units.

4. A method for direct current stimulation of a brain, comprising:

providing a channel through an aperture in a patient, the aperture and the channel being beneath the patient's scalp, the channel terminating in brain parenchyma or in a sulcus of the brain; and

wirelessly introducing direct current into and through the scalp and through the channel so that the direct current passes through the channel to brain parenchyma or in a sulcus of the brain through an ion-permeable substance via ionic conduction, the direct current being wirelessly introduced into and through the scalp from a source external the scalp.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

covering an end of the channel with the scalp.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein introducing direct current through the channel comprises introducing direct current from a source located externally of the patient through the patient's scalp.

7. A method of direct current stimulation of a brain, comprising:

wirelessly introducing direct current into and through a patient's scalp and through a channel extending through an aperture in a patient's skull and terminating in brain parenchyma or in a sulcus of the brain, the channel including an ion-permeable substance that facilitates ionic conduction of the direct current, the aperture and the channel being beneath the scalp, and the direct current being wirelessly introduced to the scalp from a source external the scalp.

8. A method of brain stimulation, comprising:

delivering electrical stimulation from a source external a patient's scalp to an area of neural tissue of a patient via the wireless introduction of electrical current into and through the scalp and via wireless electrical conduction through the scalp and through an ion-permeable substance extending along a desired path defined at least in part by a transcranial channel and a transparenchymal channel, wherein:

the transcranial channel includes an outer wall defining a first portion of the desired path and a distal end positioned at or near dura mater, the outer wall formed of a material generally impermeable to ions such that electrical conduction through a path other than the desired path is reduced, and

the transparenchymal channel includes an inner lumen defining a second portion of the desired path, the inner lumen terminating in brain parenchyma or in a sulcus of the brain.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of the desired path is contiguous with the first portion of the desired path.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of the desired path is non-contiguous with the first portion of the desired path.
