Abstract

Various methods and apparatuses for measuring a state parameter of an individual using signals based on one or more sensors are disclosed. In one embodiment, a first set of signals is used in a first function to determine how a second set of signals is used in one or more second functions to predict the state parameter. In another embodiment, first and second functions are used where the state parameter or an indicator of the state parameter may be obtained from a relationship between the first function and the second function. The state parameter may, for example, include calories consumed or calories burned by the individual. Various methods for making such apparatuses are also disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. A method for predicting a caloric intake of an individual utilizing external sensors associated with a body of said individual, comprising:

collecting sensor output signals from at least two sensors associated with the body of said individual and in a housing, said housing mounted on skin of said individual, at least one of said at least two sensors being a physiological sensor generating data indicative of a caloric expenditure of the individual;

computing the caloric intake of said individual for a period of time using collected output signals from the at least two sensors;

compiling said computations of said individual's caloric intake for said period of time into a first data set;

creating a series of mathematical operations for derivation of a predicted caloric intake of said individual from said collected sensor output signals;

using a processor to:

(i) derive a series of predicted caloric intake values of said individual from said collected sensor output signals by applying said series of mathematical operations in order to form a second data set;

(ii) compare said first data set with said second data set;

(iii) modify said series of mathematical operations to form a modified series of mathematical operations in accordance with said comparison of said first and second data sets, such that said predicted caloric intake for said period of time is correlated with said computed caloric intake for said period of time; and

computing said caloric intake of said individual for said period of time solely by deriving said caloric intake of said individual from said collected sensor output signals by utilizing said modified series of mathematical operations.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said modification further comprises the application of regression algorithms.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said modification further comprises the application of a naive Bayesian classifier.

4. A system for predicting a caloric intake of an individual, comprising:

at least two sensors associated with a body of said individual for generating sensor output signals when said at least two sensors are in a housing, said housing mounted on skin of said individual, at least one of said at least two sensors being a physiological sensor generating data indicative of a caloric expenditure of said individual;

a memory circuit containing: (i) stored mathematical operations for derivation of a predicted caloric intake of said individual from said sensor output signals and (ii) a series of actual and predicted caloric intake values, wherein said actual caloric intake value is determined by applying said stored mathematical operations to said sensor output signals;

a processor in electronic communication with said at least two sensors and said memory circuit for: (i) receiving said sensor output signals from said at least two sensors, (ii) applying said stored mathematical operations to said sensor output signals to determine said individual's caloric intake value; (iii) comparing said determined caloric intake value to said predicted caloric intake values and (iv) modifying said mathematical operations in accordance with said comparison of said determined and predicted caloric intake values such that said predicted caloric intake value is correlated with said determined caloric intake value; and

a display in electronic communication with said processor for displaying at least one of said determined and said predicted caloric intake values for said individual.

5. The system according to claim 4 , wherein said at least two sensors are in a housing, said housing mounted on an upper arm of the individual.

6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein said processor is mounted within said housing.

7. The system according to claim 4 , further comprising a transceiver circuit, in electronic communication with said processor, for transmission of said sensor output signals.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein said processor further comprises multiple processors and wherein said transceiver circuit facilitates communication therebetween.

9. A system for predicting a caloric intake of an individual, comprising:

at least two sensors associated with a body of said individual for generating sensor output signals when mounted on skin of said individual, at least one of said at least two sensors being a physiological sensor generating data indicative of a caloric expenditure;

a memory circuit containing stored mathematical operations for the derivation of a predicted caloric intake of said individual from said sensor output signals;

a processor in electronic communication with said at least two sensors and said memory circuit for: (i) receiving said sensor output signals from said at least two sensors and (ii) applying said stored mathematical operations to said sensor output signals to predict said individual's caloric intake; and

a display, in electronic communication with said processor for said predicted caloric intake for said individual.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said at least two sensors are in a device that is mounted on an upper arm of the individual.

11. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said processor is mounted within said device.

12. The system according to claim 9 , further comprising a transceiver circuit, in electronic communication with said processor, for transmission of said predicted caloric intake to said display, wherein said display is remote from said processor.

13. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said processor further comprises multiple processors and further comprising a transceiver circuit, in electronic communication with said processors, wherein said transceiver circuit facilitates communication between said multiple processors.

14. The system according to claim 9 , wherein said processor is mounted within a mobile communications device.

15. The system according to claim 14 , further comprising a transceiver circuit for facilitating said electronic communication between said processor and said sensors.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein said transceiver circuit is provided by a mobile communications device.
