Abstract

A method of promoting the healing of a lesion in a smooth muscle ( 200 ), comprises selecting a smooth muscle portion having a lesion, and applying a non-excitory electric field ( 210 ) to the portion, which reduces the mechanical activity of the portion.

Claims (31)

1. Apparatus for regulating glucose level, the apparatus comprising:

at least one electrode adapted to apply an electric field to a pancreas; and

circuitry configured to electrify said electrode to alter a rate of insulin production by the pancreas by modifying a responsiveness thereof to chemical signals.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 , configured to decrease the rate of insulin production.

3. Apparatus for regulating glucose level, the apparatus comprising:

at least one electrode adapted to apply an electric field to an endocrine gland; and

circuitry configured to electrify said electrode to alter responsiveness of the endocrine gland to chemical signals related to ingestion of food.

4. Apparatus according to claim 3 , configured to increase responsiveness of the endocrine gland to ingestion of food.

5. Apparatus according to claim 3 , configured to decrease responsiveness of a pancreas to ingestion of food.

6. Apparatus according to claim 3 , configured to decrease responsiveness of a stomach to ingestion of food.

7. Apparatus according to claim 3 , configured to decrease responsiveness of a duodenum to ingestion of food.

8. A method of regulating glucose level, the method comprising:

providing at least one electrode adapted to apply an electric field to an endocrine tissue; and

applying a non-excitatory electric field to the endocrine tissue using said at least one electrode to alter at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of responsiveness of the endocrine tissue to ingestion of food and rate of endocrine secretion and/or production as affected by modulation of the responsiveness of the endocrine tissue.

9. A method according to claim 8 , wherein responsiveness of the endocrine tissue to ingestion of food is altered by being increased.

10. A method according to claim 8 , wherein responsiveness of the endocrine tissue to ingestion of food is altered by being decreased.

11. A method according to claim 8 , wherein rate of insulin production is altered by being decreased.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein rate of insulin production is decreased but not stopped.

13. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying said field comprises altering responsiveness of the endocrine tissue to chemical signals related to ingestion of food.

14. A method according to claim 8 , wherein providing comprises attaching said electrode to a stomach.

15. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said field is applied to a stomach.

16. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said field is applied to a duodenum.

17. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said field is applied to a pancreas.

18. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said field has a periodically varying polarity.

19. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying comprises applying during a refractory period.

20. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying comprises applying in response to an electrical measurement of said tissue.

21. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying comprises applying in response to a determination of food location in a GI tract.

22. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying comprises applying without electrical measurement.

23. A method according to claim 8 , wherein applying comprises applying in response to chemical levels in a body.

24. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said electrode is implanted.

25. A method according to claim 8 , comprising also applying a pacing field to said tissue.
