Abstract

A method and system for providing target code to various computer systems. The target code is provided by a service. The service provides a mechanism for third-party developers to submit initial or base code for distribution to end-user computers as target code. The service converts the initial code to target code that is suitable for execution on the end-user computers. When the service receives the request for target code that matches certain requester-specified characteristics, it selects the intermediate code that best matches the requester-specified characteristics. The service then sends the target code to the requester.

Claims (23)

1. A method, comprising:

a server computing system receiving, from a developer, initial program code and information identifying at least one compatible execution environment and a functionality for the initial program code;

the server computing system validating the initial program code against the information;

the server computing system generating target code in a format executable by an end-user computing device;

responsive to a request for code satisfying the functionality, the server computing system transmitting the target code to the end-user computing device; and

receiving data regarding utilization of the target code by the end-user computing device, the data being usable to calculate a compensation amount for the developer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the initial program code is source code and the target code is executable code.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the validating further includes determining whether the developer is authorized to submit base code.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information identifies a functional category for the code.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the end-user computing device is a web pad.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating includes optimizing the target code in accordance with at least one requester-specified criterion.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating includes compiling the initial program code to produce executable target code in accordance with at least one requester-specified criterion.

8. A method, comprising:

a computing device receiving base code and information identifying at least one compatible execution environment and a functionality for the base code from a developer;

the computing device evaluating the base code to determine whether it satisfies the information;

the computing device transforming the base code into code in a target format executable by a target architecture;

responsive to a request from a requesting computer for code configured to satisfy a specified functionality, the computing device transmitting the code in the target format to the requesting computer; and

receiving data indicative of usage of the code in the target format by the requesting computer, the data usable to determine a compensation amount for the developer.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the transforming the base code into the code in the target format further comprises:

transforming the base code into code in an intermediate format; and

transforming the code in the intermediate format into the code in the target format.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the transforming the intermediate code into the code in the target format further comprises selecting intermediate code based at least in part on processor speed requirements, processor type, or memory requirements.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating target code is based at least in part on processor speed requirements, processor type, or memory requirements.
