Abstract

This invention is a retinal electrode array assembly and methods of using the same that facilitate surgical implant procedures by providing the operating surgeon with visual references and grasping means and with innovations that reduce actual and potential damage to the retina and the surrounding tissue.

Claims (22)

1. An electrode array for a retinal prosthesis comprising:

a flexible array body, having an upper surface and a lower surface opposite the upper surface;

a plurality of electrodes supported by said flexible array body suitable to stimulate retinal tissue on the lower surface;

a supply cable suitable to connect the plurality of electrodes to an electronics package outside the eye;

a grasping handle, molded of a soft polymer suitable to be engaged by a forceps, separate from the supply cable, and molded to extend from the upper surface so as to provide separation between the grasping handle and a retina and to protect the retina from the surgical instrument, and adapted for holding with the surgical instrument, the surgical instrument suitable to insert in an eye during implantation to manipulate the array in all dimensions; and

a strain relief slot in the flexible array body curved part of the way around an aperture which defines a strain relief internal tab for relief of stresses formed when the electrode array body is attached to the retina of the recipient.

2. The electrode array according to claim 1 , wherein the flexible array body is made of silicone having a hardness of about 50 or less on the Shore A scale as measured with a durometer.

3. The electrode array according to claim 1 , wherein the strain relief internal tab is thinner than the rest of the flexible array body thereby reducing stress in the retina from attachment of the electrode array.

4. The electrode array according to claim 2 , wherein the strain relief internal tab is made of a softer silicone than the rest of the flexible array body.

5. The electrode array according to claim 1 , further comprising a reinforcing ring surrounds the aperture in the flexible array body for structural support of a surgical tack.

6. The electrode array according to claim 5 wherein the reinforcing ring is colored to make visually locating the aperture by the surgeon during surgery easier.

7. The electrode array according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one ferromagnetic keeper in the flexible array body for attaching the electrode array to the retina.

8. The electrode array according to claim 7 , wherein the flexible array body is made of silicone having a hardness of about 50 or less on the Shore A scale as measured with a durometer.

9. The electrode array according to claim 1 , wherein the grasping handle is a hemi-tube to allow the insertion of a surgical tool during implantation surgery.

10. The electrode array according to claim 1 , wherein the grasping handle is a hemi-tube with an internal hole diameter approximately equal to the tube wall thickness.

11. A retinal prosthesis comprising:

a flexible array body, having an upper surface and a lower surface opposite the upper surface;

a plurality of electrodes supported by said flexible array body suitable to stimulate retinal tissue on the lower surface;

an implantable electronics package;

a supply cable suitable to connect the plurality of electrodes to the electronics package outside the eye;

a grasping handle, molded of a soft polymer suitable to be engaged by a forceps, separate from the supply cable, and molded to extend from the upper surface, so as to provide separation between the grasping handle and a retina and to protect the retina from the surgical instrument, and adapted for holding with the surgical instrument, the surgical instrument suitable to insert in an eye during implantation to manipulate the array in all dimensions; and

a strain relief slot in the flexible array body curved part of the way around an aperture which defines a strain relief internal tab for relief of stresses formed when the electrode array body is attached to the retina of the recipient.
