Abstract

An eye treatment cassette includes a handpiece, a vacuum source, a holding tank, a collection bag, and a displacement-based pump. The handpiece is configured to aspirate fluids from a patient's eye. The vacuum source communicates with the handpiece. The holding tank is interposed between the handpiece and the vacuum source, and is configured to hold the aspirated fluids. The collection bag is connected to the holding tank for collecting the aspirated fluids. The pump is coupled to the holding tank and is configured to operate while the vacuum source continues to aspirate fluids via the handpiece to drain the aspirated fluids from the holding tank.

Claims (33)

1. A method for venting a handpiece of an eye treatment cassette, comprising:

operating the eye treatment cassette such that a vacuum is induced at the handpiece by a vacuum source fluidly connected to the handpiece and a holding tank;

venting the handpiece by closing a valve

interposed between the vacuum source and the handpiece to push fluid toward the handpiece; and

operating a volumetric pump to increase pressure in the handpiece.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the volumetric pump to increase the pressure in the handpiece comprises operating the volumetric pump in a reverse direction.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein operating the volumetric pump to increase the pressure in the handpiece comprises operating the volumetric pump in a reverse direction, wherein a forward direction the volumetric pump provides aspiration via the handpiece.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the valve is a variable restrictor valve.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the volumetric pump is a displacement pump.

6. A method for draining aspirated fluids collected in a holding tank of an eye treatment cassette, comprising:

operating a vacuum source connected to a handpiece via the holding tank, wherein the vacuum source and the handpiece are fluidly connected by a single valve; and

operating a displacement-based pump fluidly connected between the holding tank and a collection bag to drain the aspirated fluids from the holding tank while continuing operation of the vacuum source connected to the handpiece.

7. An eye treatment cassette, comprising:

a handpiece configured to aspirate fluids from an eye;

a vacuum source communicating with the handpiece;

a holding tank interposed between the handpiece and the vacuum source configured to hold the aspirated fluids, wherein the handpiece and the vacuum source are fluidly connected by a single valve;

a collection bag connected to the holding tank for collecting the aspirated fluids; and

a displacement-based pump fluidly coupled between the holding tank and the collection bag, and configured to operate while the vacuum source continues to aspirate fluids via the handpiece to drain the aspirated fluids from the holding tank.

8. The cassette of claim 7 , further comprising a second displacement-based pump fluidly coupled between the handpiece and the holding tank.

9. The cassette of claim 8 , wherein the second displacement-based pump is configured to provide aspiration via the handpiece when operated in a forward direction and is configured to vent the handpiece when operated in a reverse direction.

10. The cassette of claim 9 , wherein the second displacement-based pump is configured to act as a pinch valve when not operating to vent or aspirate the handpiece.

11. The cassette of claim 8 , wherein the second displacement-based pump comprises a peristaltic pump.

12. An eye treatment cassette, comprising:

a handpiece configured to aspirate fluids from an eye;

a vacuum source communicating with the handpiece;

a holding tank interposed between the handpiece and the vacuum source configured to hold the aspirated fluids;

a collection bag connected to the holding tank for collecting the aspirated fluids;

a displacement-based pump fluidly coupled between the holding tank and the collection bag, and configured to operate while the vacuum source continues to aspirate fluids via the handpiece to drain the aspirated fluids from the holding tank; and

a second displacement-based pump fluidly coupled between the handpiece and the holding tank.

13. The cassette of claim 12 , further comprising a second displacement-based pump fluidly coupled between the handpiece and the holding tank.

14. The cassette of claim 13 , wherein the second displacement-based pump is configured to provide aspiration via the handpiece when operated in a forward direction and is configured to vent the handpiece when operated in a reverse direction.

15. The cassette of claim 14 , wherein the second displacement-based pump is configured to act as a pinch valve when not operating to vent or aspirate the handpiece.

16. The cassette of claim 13 , wherein the second displacement-based pump comprises a peristaltic pump.
