Abstract

A flexible hose having a non-fluorinated rubber inner tube, a non-fluorinated rubber outer cover, an intermediate barrier layer consisting essentially of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) having an ethylene content less than 30 mole %, and preferably a textile reinforcement between said barrier layer and said outer cover. A non-fluorinated rubber tie layer may be included between the barrier and the reinforcement. Permeability to ethanol- and methanol-containing fuels is very low.

Claims (39)

1 . A flexible hose comprising:

a rubber inner tube;

a rubber outer cover; and

an intermediate barrier layer comprising ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having an ethylene content less than 30 mole %.

2 . The hose of claim 1 wherein said rubber tube and said rubber cover are based on non-fluorinated rubber compositions.

3 . The hose of claim 1 wherein said barrier layer is a seamless, tubular layer.

4 . The hose of claim 2 further comprising a non-fluorinated tie layer between said barrier layer and said cover.

5 . The hose of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has an ethylene content of from about 20% to about 29%.

6 . The hose of claim 1 wherein the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has an ethylene content of about 24%.

7 . The hose of claim 1 wherein the radial thickness of the intermediate barrier layer is in the range from 0.025 mm to 0.76 mm.

8 . The hose of claim 1 wherein the radial thickness of the intermediate barrier layer is in the range from 0.025 mm to 0.38 mm.

9 . The hose of claim 1 wherein the radial thickness of the intermediate barrier layer is in the range from 0.07 mm to 0.18 mm.

10 . The hose of claim 4 further comprising a textile or fiber reinforcement, wherein said reinforcement resides between the tie layer and the outer cover.

11 . The hose of claim 1 having a permeability to CM15 or CE10 Fuel of less than 2 g/m 2 /day at 40° C. or less than 40 g/m 2 /day at 60° C. when tested according to SAE J1737, or less than 2 g/m 2 /day at 60° C. when tested according to a SAE J30 Section 9.

12 . The hose of claim 10 wherein the textile reinforcement comprises one or more layers of spiraled, knit, woven, or braided yarn comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of polyester, nylon, rayon, and aramid.

13 . The hose of claim 12 wherein said inner tube rubber composition comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of NBR, HNBR, CR, CSM, ECO, and CPE; and wherein said outer cover composition comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of NBR, HNBR, CR, CSM, ECO, CPE, EVM, EPM, and EPDM.

14 . The hose of claim 10 wherein at least one of said inner tube and said outer cover comprise acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, and the reinforcement comprises nylon or polyamide.

15 . The hose of claim 4 wherein the rubber of the inner tube and the tie layer comprise silica, resorcinol, and a formaldehyde donor, or equivalents thereof, as an adhesion promoting system.

16 . A fuel hose comprising:

a non-fluorinated rubber inner tube;

a non-fluorinated rubber outer cover;

an intermediate barrier layer consisting essentially of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having an ethylene content less than 29 mole %; and

a textile reinforcement disposed between said barrier layer and said outer cover.

17 . The hose of claim 16 further comprising a non-fluorinated tie layer between said barrier layer and said reinforcement.

18 . The hose of claim 16 wherein the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has an ethylene content of about 24 mole %.

19 . The hose of claim 16 having a permeability to CM15 or CE10 Fuel of less than 2 g/m 2 /day at 40° C. or less than 40 g/m 2 /day at 60° C. when tested according to SAE J1737.

20 . A method comprising:

forming an inner tube of non-fluorinated rubber,

forming an outer cover of non-fluorinated rubber;

disposing a barrier layer of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having less than 30 mole % ethylene content on said inner tube;

thereby providing a hose with low permeability to fuel and increased burst pressure.

21 . The method of claim 20 wherein said disposing comprises extruding a tubular layer of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer onto said inner tube in continuous manner with no overlap or seam.

22 . The method of claim 21 further comprising:

forming a tie layer of non-fluorinated rubber on said intermediate layer.

23 . The method of claim 22 further comprising:

applying a textile reinforcement layer on said tie layer.

24 . A hose system comprising:

at least one length of hose comprising a rubber inner tube, a rubber outer cover, and an intermediate barrier layer consisting essentially of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having an ethylene content less than 30 mole %; and

at least one fitting, clamp, or fluid-handling device.
