Abstract

A computer system which includes a CPU for performing various processes by program control and storage elements which store at least one operating system and a BIOS, wherein upon starting a system, the CPU recognizes the system's own hardware configuration, and starts a selected one operating system stored in the storage elements in accordance with the recognized hardware configuration under the control of the BIOS.

Claims (32)

1. A computing system, comprising:

a first computer data storage element that stores a first operating system;

a second computer data storage element that stores a second operating system;

a third computer data storage element that stores a basic input/output system (BIOS); and

a central processing unit (CPU) in operative communication with the first, second and third computer data storage elements,

wherein, upon resuming the computing system from a suspended state, the CPU, executing the first operating system under control of the BIOS, selectively starts either the first or the second operating system based on a hardware configuration of the computing system,

wherein the CPU powers the first computer data storage element and starts the first operating system when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is in operative communication with a computer docking station, and

the CPU starts the second operating system by executing a program image of the second operating system stored in the third computer data storage element, without powering the first computer data storage element, when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is not in operative communication with the computer docking station.

2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the first computer data storage element is a magnetic disk drive.

3. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the second computer data storage element is flash memory.

4. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the third computer data storage element is a main memory.

5. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the first operating system is a general-purpose operating system for a desktop computer.

6. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the second operating system is a small operating system for a portable computer operating as a stand-alone computer.

7. A method, comprising:

starting, under control of a BIOS, a CPU of a computing system;

determining the computing system is resuming from a suspended state;

determining a hardware configuration of the computing system, wherein the hardware configuration indicates whether the computing system is in operative communication with a computer docking system;

powering a first computer data storage element storing a first operating system and starting the first operating system, both with the CPU under the control of the BIOS, when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is in operative communication with the computer docking station, and

starting, with the CPU under the control of the BIOS, a second operating system, without powering the first computer data storage element, when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is not in operative communication with the computer docking station.

8. The method of claim 7 , further including determining a flag that indicates the computing system is in the suspended state and is set in a register when determining the computing system is resuming from the suspended state.

9. The method of claim 7 , further including loading the first operating system into main memory and starting the first operating system from the main memory.

10. The method of claim 7 , further including starting the second operating system by starting an image of the second operating system stored in the main memory.

11. The method of claim 10 , further including registering an address of the image of the second operating system in the main memory.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the image of the second operating system is stored in a Non Volatile Sleeping (NVS) portion of the main memory.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the NVS portion is powered on when the computing system is in the suspended state.

The method of claim 7 , further including obtaining a device identifier from the computer docking station when the computing system is in operative communication with the computer docking station, wherein the device identifier indicates that the computing system is in operative communication with the computer docking station.

15. The method of claim 7 , further including:

determining the computing system is resuming from a hibernation state in which power is removed from the computing system;

determining a hardware configuration of the computing system, where the hardware configuration indicates whether the computing system is in operative communication with a computer docking system;

starting the first operating system in the first computer data storage element when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is in operative communication with the computer docking station, and

removing power from the first computer data storage element and starting the second operating system in the second computer data storage element when the hardware configuration indicates that the computing system is not in operative communication with the computer docking station.

16. The method of claim 15 , further including determining a flag that indicates the computing system is in the hibernation state and is set in a register when determining the computing system is resuming from the hibernation state.
