Abstract

A cartridge for a pen-like modular printing device is provided. The printing device includes a chassis defining a print media feed path, a feed mechanism to feed said media along the feed path, a feed path width printhead for printing on said media, and a controller for controlling the feed mechanism and printhead. The cartridge defines at least one ink reservoir which is operatively arranged in fluid communication with the printhead via ink channels defined in the chassis. The cartridge further has an integrated circuit for monitoring ink levels in the reservoir, with the integrated circuit operatively arranged in signal communication with the controller. The cartridge is shaped and configured to be received in the pen-like chassis.

Claims (9)

1. A cartridge for a pen-like modular printing device which has a tubular chassis defining a print media feed path, a feed mechanism to feed said media along the feed path, a feed path width printhead for printing on said media, and a controller for controlling the feed mechanism and printhead, said cartridge comprising at least one ink reservoir configured for fluid communication with the printhead via ink channels defined in the chassis; and

an integrated circuit for monitoring ink levels in the reservoir, the integrated circuit configured for signal communication with the controller, wherein

the cartridge has a semi-annular cross-section adapted to match a curvature of the tubular chassis.

2. The cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit is configured for signal communication with the controller via a serial bus interface.

3. The cartridge of claim 2 , wherein the integrated circuit is in the form of a QA integrated circuit configured for communication with a QA integrated circuit of the controller.

4. The cartridge of claim 3 , wherein the QA integrated circuit is configured for communication with the QA integrated circuit of the controller via a low speed serial interface.

5. The cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising recesses to accommodate the feed mechanism when received in the chassis.

6. The cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a sliding latch for detachably attaching the cartridge to the chassis.

7. The cartridge of claim 6 , wherein the sliding latch is accessible from an external side of the chassis.
