Abstract

A roller assembly for bidirectionally dispensing and compacting a strip of a material onto a surface without requiring the roller assembly to rotate 180° to dispense the material in the reverse direction. The roller assembly comprises a first guide element, a second guide element, a third guide element, and a compacting roller. When the first guide element is in a first position, the strip of the material is fed to the second guide element. When the first guide element is in a second position, the strip of the material is fed to the third guide element. The compacting roller is malleable and substantially crowned around an outer circumferential surface of the compacting roller to provide even compaction to the strip of the material.

Claims (38)

1. A roller assembly comprising:

a first roller with an outer circumferential surface;

a first guide element having a first end and a second end, the first guide element being movable between a first position and a second position;

a second guide element presenting a first guide surface that generally follows a first portion of the outer circumferential surface of the first roller; and

a third guide element presenting a second guide surface that generally follows a second portion of the outer circumferential surface of the first roller;

wherein the first end of the first guide element is proximate the second guide element when the first guide element is in the first position, and is proximate the third guide element when the first guide element is in the second position.

2. The roller assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a cutting mechanism proximate the first guide element.

3. The roller assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second roller;

a third roller biased against the second roller; and

a first actuator for rotating at least one of the second roller and third roller.

4. The roller assembly of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the second roller and third roller is moveable away from the other one of the second roller and third roller by the first actuator.

5. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outer circumferential surface of the first roller is substantially crowned between a first edge and a second edge, such that a portion of the outer circumferential surface farthest from a rotational axis of the first roller is approximately half-way between the first edge and the second edge.

6. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first roller is made of a substantially malleable material.

7. The roller assembly of claim 3 , further comprising a cutting mechanism adjacent to the second roller and the third roller.

8. The roller assembly of claim 7 , wherein the cutting mechanism, second roller, and third roller are interposed between the first guide element and a fourth guide element.

9. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first roller has a width in the range of from about 0.01 inches to about 15 inches and a diameter in the range of from about 0.1 inches to about 15 inches.

10. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first roller has a width in the range of from about 0.125 inches to about 3 inches and a diameter in the range of from about 0.50 inches to about 3 inches.

11. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of each of the second and third guide elements is curved to generally match a portion of a circumference of the first roller.

12. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first guide element is pivotable about a pivot to the first position and to the second position.

13. The roller assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the outer circumferential surface is generally opposed to the second portion of the outer circumferential surface.

14. A roller assembly comprising:

a first roller;

a first guide element;

a second guide element operable to guide a material along a portion of a first side of the first roller; and

a third guide element operable to guide the material along a portion of a second side of the first roller;

wherein the first guide element guides the material into the second guide element when the first guide element is in a first position and the first guide element guides the material into the third guide element when the first guide element is in a second position.

15. A roller assembly comprising:

a first roller;

a first guide element pivotable between a first position and a second position;

a cutting mechanism;

a second guide element operable to guide material along a portion of a first side of the first roller;

a third guide element operable to guide material along a portion of a second side of the first roller, wherein the third guide element is on a generally opposite side of the roller from the second guide element;

a fourth guide element;

a second roller; and

a third roller, wherein the second roller and the third roller are biased against each other with a portion of the material interposed therebetween, wherein a second activator rotates at least one of the second roller and third roller while the second roller and the third roller are biased against each other, thereby feeding the material to the first roller;

wherein a first actuator moves at least one of the second roller and third roller away from the other one of the second roller and third roller to disengage the material interposed therebetween; and

wherein the first guide element guides the material to the second guide element when the first guide element is in the first position and the first guide element guides the material to the third guide element when the first guide element is in the second position.
