Abstract

Implantable pulse generators and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) systems are provided. The implantable pulse generator comprises telemetry circuitry configured for wirelessly receiving programming signals from an external programmer, and a plurality of bi-directional current sources configured for being respectively coupled to a plurality of electrodes. The implantable pulse generator further comprises control circuitry configured for directing the bi-directional current sources to output current pulses of a selected amplitude and polarity to the electrodes in accordance with the programming signals. The SCS system may comprise a plurality of electrodes, an external programmer configured for transmitting programming signals, and the afore-described implantable pulse generator as described above. In one embodiment, the SCS system further comprises one or more stimulation leads carrying the electrodes, in which case, the implantable pulse generator may further include a connector removably mated to the stimulation lead(s).

Claims (26)

1. An implantable pulse generator, comprising:

telemetry circuitry configured for wirelessly receiving programming signals from an external programmer;

a plurality of bi-directional current sources configured for being respectively coupled to a plurality of electrodes; and

control circuitry configured for directing the bi-directional current sources to output current pulses of a selected amplitude and polarity to the electrodes in accordance with the programming signals.

2. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein each of the bi-directional current sources comprises a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) current source.

3. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of bi-directional current sources comprises at least eight bi-directional current sources.

4. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured for independently directing the bi-directional current sources to output the current pulses of a selected amplitude and polarity to the electrodes in accordance with the programming signals.

5. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry comprises a plurality of latch circuits respectively coupled to the bi-directional current sources.

6. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is coupled to each of the bi-directional current sources via a first line on which amplitude magnitude data is conveyed, a second line designating a positive amplitude, and a third line designating a negative amplitude.

7. The implantable pulse generator of claim 6 , wherein the control circuitry is further coupled to each of the bi-directional current sources via a fourth line for designating a recharge state.

8. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , further comprising a connector configured for mating with one or more stimulation leads carrying the electrodes.

9. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of capacitors through which the bi-directional current sources are configured for being respectively coupled to the electrodes.

10. The implantable pulse generator of claim 1 , further comprising a power source configured for supplying power to the bi-directional current sources.

11. A neurostimulation system, comprising:

a plurality of electrodes;

an external programmer configured for transmitting programming signals; and

an implantable pulse generator including telemetry circuitry configured for receiving the programming signals from an external programmer, a plurality of bi-directional current sources respectively coupled to the electrodes, and control circuitry configured for directing the bi-directional current sources to output current pulses of a selected amplitude and polarity to the electrodes in accordance with the programming signals.

12. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein each of the bi-directional current sources comprises a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) current source.

13. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of bi-directional current sources comprises at least eight bi-directional current sources.

14. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured for independently directing the bi-directional current sources to output the current pulses of a selected amplitude and polarity to the electrodes in accordance with the programming signals.

15. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry comprises a plurality of latch circuits respectively coupled to the bi-directional current sources.

16. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is coupled to each of the bi-directional current sources via a first line on which amplitude magnitude data is conveyed, a second line designating a positive amplitude, and a third line designating a negative amplitude.

17. The neurostimulation system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further coupled to each of the bi-directional current sources via a fourth line for designating a recharge state.

18. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , further comprising one or more stimulation leads carrying the electrodes, wherein the implantable pulse generator further includes a connector removably mated to the one or more stimulation leads.

19. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the implantable pulse generator further includes a plurality of capacitors through which the bi-directional current sources are coupled to the electrodes.

20. The neurostimulation system of claim 11 , wherein the implantable pulse generator further includes a power source configured for supplying power to the bi-directional current sources.
