Abstract

Modular spinal prosthesis having one of both of adaptable and configurable components are provided. The modular spinal prosthesis described herein provide an artificial articular configuration to replace damaged, worn or otherwise removed spinal facet elements.

Claims (16)

1. A facet surface replacement system comprising:

a first cephalad prosthesis element and a second cephalad prosthesis element configured to replace a portion of a facet joint, wherein the first cephalad prosthesis element and the second cephalad prosthesis element include a first bone engaging end and a second end adapted to couple to a crossbar element, wherein the first cephalad prosthesis element and the second cephalad prosthesis element are slidable along a length of a crossbar element;

a first caudal prosthesis and a second caudal prosthesis configured to replace a portion of a facet joint; and

a crossbar element connected to the first and second cephalad prosthesis element, wherein the crossbar element is adjustable in length.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the crossbar element includes a pair of spherical bearings.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the spherical bearings are secured to crossbar element by a press-fit or tapered fitting.

4. A facet replacement device, comprising:

a first cephalad prosthesis element and a second cephalad prosthesis element configured to replace a portion of a facet joint, wherein the first cephalad prosthesis element is operably connected to a first articulating crossbar mount that is coupled to a crossbar and the second cephalad prosthesis element is operably connected to a second articulating crossbar mount that is coupled to a crossbar;

a first caudal prosthesis and a second caudal prosthesis configured to replace a portion of a facet joint; and

a crossbar element connected to the first and second cephalad prosthesis element, wherein the crossbar is adjustable in length.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the crossbar element includes a pair of spherical bearings.

6. The device of claim 4 , wherein the crossbar element includes at least spherical bearing having a diameter between 6 and 10 mm.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the spherical bearings are secured to crossbar element by a press-fit or tapered fitting.

8. The device of claim 4 , wherein the first articulating crossbar mount can be adjusted laterally.

9. The device of claim 4 , wherein the crossbar element includes a threaded portion.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the threaded portion is positioned at a center part of the cross element.
