Abstract

A thumbwheel input device oriented on an incline and comprising a wheel such that a first input is generated by rotation of the wheel about its axis, and a holder also having an axis of rotation and a portion thereon to receive the wheel whereby a second input is generated by rotation of the holder about the second axis.

Claims (16)

1. A mobile device apparatus for a mobile device having a housing, said apparatus comprising:

a microprocessor;

a holder oriented on an angle from a horizontal plane of the device housing; and

a thumbwheel input device seated at said holder, said thumbwheel input device comprised of a wheel having a first axis of rotation whereby a first signal is input to the microprocessor by rotation of the wheel about the first axis, and said wheel, together with said holder, having a second axis of rotation, different than the first axis of rotation, wherein a second signal is input to the microprocessor by rotation about the second axis.

2. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thumbwheel input device includes a thumbwheel in the shape of a frustrum of a right circular cone with a central axis about which the thumbwheel rotates.

3. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thumbwheel input device includes an encoder switch.

4. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thumbwheel input device is coupled to said microprocessor by a thumbwheel input device control circuit.

5. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 wherein the thumbwheel input device is attached to the circuit board through a flex circuit.

6. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board is substantially planar and wherein the first axis of rotation is inclined at a first angle, relative to the substantially planar circuit board.

7. The mobile device apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first angle is between 0 and 45 degrees relative to the printed circuit board.

8. The mobile device apparatus of claim 1 further comprised of a tactile switch coupled to the microprocessor and actuated by rotation of the substantially planar circuit board about a second axis of rotation that is substantially orthogonal to the first axis of rotation, actuation of the tactile switch generating a second input signal to the microprocessor.

9. A mobile device comprising:

a microprocessor;

a display device coupled to the microprocessor;

a substantially planar circuit board, the circuit board having an edge;

a thumbwheel input device mounted on the printed circuit board and electrically coupled to the microprocessor, the thumbwheel input device comprised of a wheel having a first axis of rotation whereby a first signal is input to the microprocessor by rotation of the wheel about the first axis, and a tactile switch coupled to said microprocessor and actuated by rotation of the substantially planar circuit board about a second axis of rotation that is substantially orthogonal to the first axis of rotation, the second axis of rotation substantially coincident with said edge, rotation of the substantially planar circuit board about said axis causing actuation of said tactile switch, the actuation of the tactile switch generating a second input signal to the microprocessor.
