Abstract

A method includes receiving a request, probing a first file server based on the request, and reading a stub file on the first file server based on a result of the probing. The stub file includes target information. The method further includes storing at least a portion of the target information.

Claims (45)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving a request;

probing a first file server based on the request;

reading a stub file on the first file server based on a result of the probing, the stub file comprising target information; and

storing at least a portion of the target information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request comprises receiving the request, from a client, to perform a file operation, the request resulting from a referral by a distributed file system (“DFS”) server.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein reading the stub file comprises reading the stub file on the first file server if the result of the probing indicates the stub file resides on the first file server, the stub file comprising target information.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein storing at least a portion of the target information further comprises storing the result of the probing.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising forwarding the request to a second location based on the target information.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein forwarding the request comprises forwarding the request to a second location based on the target information, the second location on a second file server.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein forwarding the request comprises forwarding the request to a second location based on the target information, wherein the second location is on the first file server, but not at the location probed.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein forwarding the request comprises:

modifying the request based on the target information; and

forwarding the request.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein reading the stub file comprises reading the target information based on the result of the probing, the target information comprising target file server, target share, target path, and target type information.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein reading the stub file further comprises reading source information based on the result of the probing, the stub file comprising the source information, the source information comprising source file server, source share, source path, and source type information.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein reading the stub file further comprises reading a modified timestamp based on the result of the probing, the stub file comprising the modified timestamp.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the request further comprises converting a handle-based request into a path-based request.

13 . A computer-readable medium storing a software program that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to:

receive a request;

probe a first file server based on the request;

read a stub file on the first file server based on a result of the probing, the stub file comprising target information; and

store at least a portion of the target information.

14 . The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein reading the stub file causes the processor to:

read the target information if the result of the probing indicates the stub file resides on the first file server;

modify the request based on the target information; and

forward the request to a second location.

15 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein reading the stub file causes the processor to read the target information based on the result of the probing, the target information comprising target file server, target share, target path, and target type information.

16 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein reading the stub file further causes the processor to read source information based on the result of the probing, the stub file comprising the source information, the source information comprising source file server, source share, source path, and source type information.

17 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein reading the stub file further causes the processor to read a modified timestamp based on the result of the probing, the stub file comprising the modified timestamp.

18 . A system comprising:

a client coupled to a network;

a first file server coupled to the network;

a second file server coupled to the network;

a DFS server coupled to the network; and

a file migration engine (“FME”) coupled to the network, the FME configured to receive a request from the client, probe the first file server based on the request, read a stub file on the first file server based on a result of the probing, the stub file comprising target information, and store at least a portion of the target information.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the FME is configured to read the target information based on the result of the probing, the target information comprising target file server, target share, target path, and target type information.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the FME is further configured to read source information based on the result of the probing, the stub file comprising the source information, the source information comprising source file server, source share, source path, and source type information.

21 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the target information comprises a reference to a second stub file.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the target information further comprises target path information represented by a global unique identifier.

24 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the second stub file comprises target file server, target share, and target type information.

24 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the request results from a referral by the DFS server.

25 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the FME is configured to:

modify the request based on the target information; and

forward the request.
