Abstract

An exemplary medical apparatus insertable into the vasculature of a patient at an insertion point for treating a defect in the heart, may include an elongated, flexible driver sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the defect in the heart; and a staple frangibly attached to the distal end of the driver. Another exemplary medical apparatus may include a catheter sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the patent foramen ovale; a housing attached to the distal end of the catheter; a driver extending into the housing; and a staple frangibly attached to the driver. Another exemplary medical apparatus may include a steering catheter sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the patent foramen ovale; an end effector attached to the distal end of the steering catheter, the end effector having a cross-section sufficiently small to allow it to be moved through the vasculature to the patent foramen ovale; and a staple held by the end effector, wherein the staple is frangibly separable from and deployable out of the end effector to close the patent foramen ovale.

Claims (21)

1. Medical apparatus insertable into the vasculature of a patient at an insertion point for treating a defect in the heart, comprising:

an elongated, flexible driver sufficient in length to extend intravascularly from the insertion point to the defect in the heart; and

a staple that includes a plurality of tines each extending at least partially in the distal direction, wherein said staple and said driver initially form a continuous structure with said staple at the distal end thereof;

wherein said driver is movable to first splay said staple by applying force to at least two said tines to cause the distal ends of said tines to move away from one another, and wherein the driver is further movable to then cause said staple to close and then fracture from the distal end of said driver to become a separate structure from said driver.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said staple has more than two tines.

The apparatus of claim 1 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, further comprising at least one butterfly member extending distal to said driver and said staple, wherein each said butterfly member is sized for insertion through the defect in the heart, and wherein each said butterfly member is expandable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, then collapsible from said expanded configuration to said collapsed configuration.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, further comprising a housing into which said driver extends and within which at least part of said staple is held.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, further comprising an elongated flexible shaft through which said driver extends, said shaft sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the defect in the heart.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said shaft is a steering catheter.

7. Medical apparatus insertable into the vasculature of a patient at an insertion point for treating a patent foramen ovale in the heart, comprising:

a catheter sufficient in length to extend intravascularly from the insertion point to the patent foramen ovale;

a housing attached to the distal end of said catheter;

a driver extending into said housing; and

a staple connected to the distal end of said driver, said staple including a plurality of tines, wherein said staple and said driver initially form a continuous structure; wherein said driver is movable to first splay said staple by applying force to at least two said tines to cause the distal ends of said tines to move away from one another; and wherein said staple is breakable from said driver upon further movement of said driver to become a separate structure from said driver.

The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, further comprising at least one butterfly member extending distal to said housing, wherein each said butterfly member is sized for insertion through the patent foramen ovale, and wherein each said butterfly member is expandable from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration, then collapsible from said expanded configuration to said collapsed configuration.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said catheter is a steering catheter.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said housing includes at least one cutaway defined therein to receive a workpiece guidewire therethrough.

11. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said staple includes a plurality of tines.

12. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said staple is a substantially continuous solid.

13. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, wherein said staple is deployable out of the distal end of said housing.

14. The apparatus of claim 7 , incorporating by reference all of the limitations of that claim, further comprising at least one said butterfly member connected to and extending distally from said housing.
