Abstract

A resilient virtual Ethernet ring has nodes interconnected by working and protection paths. If a span fails, the two nodes immediately on either side of the failure are cross-connected to fold the ring. Working-path traffic is cross-connected onto the protection path at the first of the two nodes and is then cross-connected back onto the working path at the second of the two nodes so that traffic always ingresses and egresses the ring from the working path. A traffic originating node, upon determining that transmitted packets are being looped back due to a fault on a primary path, is adapted to switch transmission of data packets from the primary path to a secondary path.

Claims (37)

1. A method for reducing delay in a fast protection switching network caused by the looping back of transmitted packets, the method comprising:

detecting, by a source node and a destination node, occurrence of a loop back condition due to a failure on a primary path, the detecting of a loop back condition being based on receipt of an alarm indication signal (AIS) from a node that detects a failure on the primary path, the AIS indicating the occurrence of the failure on the primary path, the detection of occurrence of the loop back condition including comparing an SA MAC address of one of the source node and the destination node with an SA MAC address in a received packet;

halting transmission of packets between the source node and the destination node on the primary path; and

starting transmission of the packets between the source node and the destination node on a secondary path.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising waiting until all packets transmitted between the source node and the destination node have been looped back before starting transmitting of new packets between the source node and the destination node on the secondary path.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising buffering all the new packets before starting transmission of the packets between the source node and the destination node on the secondary path.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising transmitting all of the buffered packets between the source node and the destination node on the secondary path.

5. A method for reducing delay in a fast protection switching network caused by the looping back of transmitted packets, the method comprising:

detecting occurrence of a loop back condition due to a failure on a primary path;

halting transmission of packets between a source node and a destination node on the primary path; and

starting transmission of the packets between the source node and the destination node on a secondary path, wherein detecting occurrence of a loop back condition comprises:

transmitting continuity check messages (CCMs) between the source node and the destination node;

assuring the transmitted CCMs are not looped back to the source node and the destination node; and

determining, by the source node and destination node, that a predetermined number of CCMs have been lost.

6. A fast protection switching system comprising:

a primary path, the primary path including a source node and a destination node; and

a secondary path, the secondary path including the source node and the destination node,

the source node and destination node halting transmission of packets on the primary path and switching transmission of the packets to the secondary path upon detecting a loop back condition on the primary path, wherein at least one of the source node and destination node transmit continuity check messages (CCMs) along the primary path, assure the transmitted CCMs are not looped back, and determine that a predetermined number of CCMs have been lost, the source node and the destination node halting transmission of packets on the primary path and switching transmission of packets to the secondary path upon detecting a CCM loss.

7. The fast protection switching system of claim 6 , wherein the source node and the destination node are adapted to wait until all packets transmitted between the source node and the destination node have been looped back before starting transmission of new packets between the source node and the destination node on the secondary path.

8. The fast protection switching system of claim 7 , wherein the source node and the destination node are adapted to buffer all the new packets before starting transmission of the packets between the source node and the destination node on the secondary path.

9. The fast protection switching system of claim 8 , wherein the source node and the destination node are adapted to transmit the buffered packets on the secondary path.

10. An apparatus for a fast protection switching system having a primary path and a secondary path to a destination node, the apparatus comprising:

a network interface subsystem, the network interface subsystem arranged to transmit packets to the destination node using the primary path and the secondary path; and

a processor in communication with the interface subsystem and situated within a source node, the processor operating to:

detect a loop back condition by comparing an SA MAC address of the source node with an SA MAC address in a received packet to determine if the addresses are the same, and if the source node and destination node SA MAC addresses are the same, determining that the received packet is a loop back packet; and

halt transmission of the packets to the destination node via the primary path upon detection of a loopback condition.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the processor receives from a transit node an alarm indication signal (AIS) indicating the occurrence of a failure on the primary path, the processor halting transmission of the packets on the primary path and switching transmission of packets to the secondary path upon receipt of the AIS.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the loopback condition occurs when the processor detects that the transmitted packets are looped back from the destination node.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , the processor further operating to wait until all transmitted packets have been looped back before starting transmission of new packets toward the destination node on the secondary path.

14. An apparatus for a fast protection switching system having a primary path and a secondary path to a destination node, the apparatus comprising:

a network interface subsystem, the network interface subsystem arranged to transmit packets to the destination node using the primary path and the secondary path; and

a processor in communication with the interface subsystem, the processor operating to:

detect a loopback condition; and

halt transmission of the packets to the destination node via the primary path upon detection of a loopback condition, wherein detection of a loopback condition includes:

transmitting continuity check messages (CCMs) to the destination node;

assuring the transmitted CCMs are not looped back; and

determining that a predetermined number of CCMs have been lost.
