Abstract

The specification discloses a method for affixing a strip to an underlying web substrate. According to the method, a substrate web having at least one surface is provided and at least one strip is applied over at least a portion of the substrate surface such that at least a significant portion of an underside surface of the strip disposed adjacent the substrate surface is unbounded to the substrate. A polymer coating is extruded over both the substrate surface and the strip. The strip is thereby affixed to the substrate surface by the coating while the portion of the underside surface of the strip remains substantially unbounded to the substrate surface. At the same time, a substantial portion of an upper surface of the strip adjacent the polymer coating layer is bonded to the coating layer. Also disclosed are packaging materials formed from the reinforced substrate.

Claims (33)

1. A reinforced packaging web comprising:

a substrate web having at least one surface;

at least one strip disposed adjacent the substrate web surface such that an underside surface of the strip is disposed adjacent the substrate web surface; and

an extruded polymer coating disposed adjacent both the substrate web and the strip such that the strip is sandwiched between the substrate web and the polymer coating and is affixed to the substrate web surface by an adhesive bond of the strip to the coating and of the substrate web surface to the coating and at least a significant portion of the underside surface of the strip is substantially free of an adhesive bond to the substrate web surface such that the underside surface of the strip is substantially unbounded to the substrate web surface and a substantial portion of an upper surface of the strip adjacent the polymer coating is bonded to the coating, whereby the strip can slide relative to the substrate to the extent permitted by the coating so as to strengthen the packaging web and resist tearing of the substrate.

2. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein a plurality of strips are disposed adjacent the substrate web surface and affixed thereto by the extruded polymer coating.

3. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the substrate web is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of at least one of a paper web, an oriented polymer film, a metal foil, and a nonwoven fabric.

4. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the strip is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of at least one of a paper web, an oriented polymer film, a metal foil, and a nonwoven fabric.

5. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the extruded polymer coating is comprised of a polymer selected from the group consisting of at least one of low density polyethylene (LDPE), polyolefin plastomers (POP), polyolefin elastomers (POE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), ethylene methyl acrylate copolymer (EMA), ethylene butyl acrylate copolymer (EnBA), ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA), ethylene methyl acrylic acid copolymer (EMAA), an ionomoer, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), a polyester, and a polyamide (PA).

6. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the extruded polymer coating is comprised of a coextrusion of at least two layers of polymer films.

7. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the extruded polymer coating is comprised of a polymer selected from the group consisting of at least one of low density polyethylene (LDPE), polyolefin plastomers (POP), polyolefin elastomers (POE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and high density polyethylene (HDPE).

8. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the strip is held in place between the coating and the substrate web only by the extruded polymer coating.

9. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the strip is held in place in an enclosed pocket formed by the presence of the strip between the extruded polymer coating and the substrate web surface.

10. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the strip is an elongate web strip having a width substantially less than the width of the substrate web.

11. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein a plurality of elongate strips are disposed in side-by-side, spaced apart relation across at least a portion of the width of the substrate web.

12. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the reinforced packaging web is a ream wrapper.

13. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the reinforced packaging web is insulation facing.

14. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the reinforced packaging web is a sandwich wrapper.

15. The reinforced packaging web of claim 1 wherein the reinforced packaging web is a coffee brick wrapper.

16. A ream wrapper for wrapping reams of paper, comprising:

a substrate web having at least one surface;

two strips disposed adjacent the substrate web surface such that an underside surface of each strip is disposed adjacent the substrate web surface;

an extruded polymer coating disposed over both the substrate web and the strip such that the strip is sandwiched between the substrate web and the polymer coating and is affixed to the substrate web surface by an adhesive bond of the strip to the coating and of the substrate web surface to the coating, with the underside surface of the strip substantially free of an adhesive bond to the substrate web surface such that the underside surface of the strip is substantially unbounded to the substrate web surface and the upper surface of the strip is bonded to the coating; and

wherein the two strips are positioned along side edges of the ream wrapper and at corners of the ream wrapper.

17. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the ream wrapper has a bottom area and two top areas that are not reinforced by the two strips.

18. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the two strips reinforce at least a portion of end edges of the ream wrapper.

19. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the two strips reinforce at least a portion of diagonal folds of the ream wrapper.

20. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the width of each of the two strips is equal.

21. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the two strips are on an outside surface of the ream wrapper.

22. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the substrate web comprises paper, the extruded polymer coating comprises low density polyethylene and the two strips comprise a material selected from the group consisting of a polymer film, paper and nonwoven fabric.

23. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the substrate web is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of at least one of a paper web, an oriented polymer film, a metal foil, and a nonwoven fabric.

24. The reinforced packaging web of claim 16 wherein the two strips are comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of at least on of a paper web, a polymer film, a metal foil, and a nonwoven fabric.
