Abstract

Apparatus, methods, and systems for centrally and uniformly controlling the operation of a variety of devices, such as communication, consumer electronic, audio-video, analog, digital, 1394, and the like, over a variety of protocols within a network system and, more particularly, a control system and uniform user interface for centrally controlling these devices in a manner that appears seamless and transparent to the user. In a one embodiment, the control system will detect sync/digital video signals from an IR controlled device coupled to an input port of a primary display and control unit of the system. By testing IR power command codes, the control system can automatically identify which power commands will cause a change in input at the input port and, thus, automatically configure the control of the IR controlled device coupled to the input port.

Claims (11)

1 . A method of configuring the control of an input device coupled to a central controller of a network of input devices comprising the steps of

sending a plurality IR power control command codes to an input device coupled to an input port on a central controller, and

identifying one or more IR power command codes that control the input device by sensing a change in input signal at the input port to which the input device is coupled.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of ceasing the sending of IR power command codes to the input device once one or more IR power command codes have been identified to control the input device.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of displaying a message instructing a user to try one or more commands on a control device to verify codes associated with the power command codes are correct.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of displaying a message instructing a user to wait as the central controller identifies power control command codes that control the input device.

5 . The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of displaying advertisements while the central controller identifies power control command codes that control the input device.

6 . The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of displaying a message instructing a user to wait as the central controller identifies power control command codes that control the input device.

7 . The method of claim 6 further comprising the step of displaying advertisements while the central controller identifies power control command codes that control the input device.

8 . The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of ceasing the display advertisements once one or more IR power control command codes have been identified to control the input device.

9 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of detecting the coupling of a new input device coupled the central controller.
