Abstract

A method for determining the name of a calling party where the calling party's name and corresponding telephone number are found in a remote database. The method first identifies whether the calling party's telephone number is contained within the local database. When it is determined that the telephone number is not within the local database, the method attempts to locate the telephone number in a remote database. A query is formed according to a basic signal transmission protocol to ensure that a database which receives the query will be able to respond to it. The query requesting the name associated with the telephone number is sent across a network. The method receives a response to the inquiry and checks to ensure that a name was returned to the local database before delivering the name to the called party.

Claims (31)

1. A computer implemented method of identifying a name that corresponds to a telephone number, the method comprising:

transmitting a query, with a processor of a telephone network element, that requests a name corresponding to a telephone number to a remote location after determining the remote location is able to process the query.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

formulating the query in response to a received query.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the received query includes the telephone number.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitted query includes the telephone number.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the remote location comprises a service control point.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the query comprises:

transmitting the query in accordance with a TR1188 signaling protocol.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying the name that corresponds to the telephone number.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a name that corresponds to the telephone number from the remote location.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting a name that corresponds to the telephone number to a called party.

10. A system for identifying a name corresponding to a telephone number, the system comprising:

a telephone network element configured to transmit a query that requests a name corresponding to a telephone number to a remote location after determining the remote location is able to process the query.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the telephone network element is further configured to formulate the query in response to a received query.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the telephone network element is further configured to determine whether the remote location is able to process the transmitted query.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the telephone network element is further configured to transmit a name that corresponds to the telephone number to a called party.

14. A computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions for identifying a name that corresponds to a telephone number, the set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

transmitting a query that requests a name corresponding to a telephone number to a remote location after determining the remote location is able to process the query.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , further comprising a set of instruction to direct a processor to perform acts of:

formulating the query in response to a received query.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

determining whether the remote location is able to process the query.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

transmitting a name that corresponds to the telephone number to another location.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , further comprising a set of instructions to direct a processor to perform acts of:

transmitting a name that corresponds to the telephone number to a called party.

19. The system of claim 10 , wherein the telephone network element is a service control point.
