Abstract

Described are a service node and method for establishing a communication session between a non-SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device and a SIP-enabled communication device. The service node includes a web server component for establishing a web browser-based connection with a non-SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device over a first network. A SIP user agent of the service node establishes a SIP-based connection with a SIP-enabled communication device over a second network. Service logic establishes a transfer of media between the non-SIP-enabled computing device and the SIP-enabled communication device using the browser-based and the SIP-based connections.

Claims (35)

1 . A method for establishing a communication session between a non-SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device and a SIP-enabled communication device, the method comprising:

establishing a browser-based connection with a non-SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device over a first network;

establishing a SIP-based connection with a SIP-enabled communication device over a second network; and

establishing the transfer of media between the non-SIP-enabled computing device and the SIP-enabled communication device using the browser-based and the SIP-based connections.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of

receiving a request from a web browser executing on the non-SIP-enabled computing device to establish a session with the SIP-enabled communication device, the request including a communication address for a voice communication device; and

establishing a voice connection between the voice communication device and the SIP-enabled communication device through a voice network in response to receiving the request from the web browser.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the transfer of media occurs before establishment of the voice connection.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the transfer of media occurs after termination of the voice connection.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the transfer of media occurs while the voice connection is in progress.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the transfer of media is related to one or more of video, data, text messaging, application sharing, file transfer, and co-browsing.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of transmitting to the non-SIP-enabled computing device a click-to-communicate web page used to initiate a call to the SIP-enabled communication device.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the web page is transmitted in response to activation of a URL (universal resource locator) associated with a user of the SIP-enabled communication device.

9 . A service node comprising:

a web server component establishing a web browser-based connection with a non-SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device over a first network;

a SIP user agent establishing a SIP-based connection with a SIP-enabled communication device over a second network; and

service logic establishing the transfer of media between the non-SIP-enabled computing device and the SIP-enabled communication device using the browser-based and the SIP-based connections.

10 . The service node of claim 9 , wherein the web server component receives a request from a web browser executing on the non-SIP-enabled computing device to establish a call with the SIP-enabled communication device, the request including a communication address for a voice communication device; and

wherein the service logic establishes a voice connection between the voice communication device and the SIP-enabled communication device through a voice network in response to the request from the web browser.

11 . The service node of claim 10 , wherein the transfer of media occurs before the establishment of the voice connection.

12 . The service node of claim 10 , wherein the transfer of media occurs after termination of the voice connection.

13 . The service node of claim 10 , wherein the transfer of media occurs while the voice connection is in progress.

14 . The service node of claim 9 , wherein the transfer of media is related to one or more of video, data, text messaging, application sharing, file transfer, and co-browsing.

15 . The service node of claim 9 , wherein the web server component transmits to the non-SIP-enabled computing device a click-to-communicate web page used to initiate a call to the SIP-enabled communication device.

16 . The service node of claim 15 , wherein the web page is transmitted in response to activation of a URL (universal resource locator) associated with a user of the SIP-enabled communication device.

17 . A communications network, comprising:

a SIP (session initiation protocol)-enabled computing device and a non-SIP-enabled computing system;

a service node comprising:

a web server component establishing a web browser-based connection with the non-SIP-enabled computing device over a first network;

a SIP user agent establishing a SIP-based connection with a SIP-enabled communication device over a second network; and

service logic establishing a transfer of media between the non-SIP-enabled computing device and the SIP-enabled communication device using the browser-based and the SIP-based connections.

18 . The communications network of claim 17 , wherein the web server component receives a request from a web browser executing on the non-SIP-enabled computing device to establish a call with the SIP-enabled communication device, the request including a communication address for a voice communication device; and

wherein the service logic establishes a voice connection between the voice communication device and the SIP-enabled communication device through a voice network in response to the request from the web browser.

19 . The communications network of claim 17 , wherein the web server component transmits to the non-SIP-enabled computing device a click-to-communicate web page used to initiate a call to the SIP-enabled communication device.

20 . The communications network of claim 19 , wherein the web page is transmitted in response to activation of a URL (universal resource locator) associated with a user of the SIP-enabled communication device.
