Abstract

The invention provides for a modular printer including a housing having an upper and lower cover, with a first side wall having an air duct with an air inlet, and a second side wall defining air exit vents, so that warm air can be ducted over print media passing through the housing. The printer further includes entry and exit media feed roller assemblies at respective opposite ends of the housing for feeding the print media through the housing. Also included is a print engine having two opposing arcuate printheads having a radius of curvature which approximates that of the radius of the rollers. The printhead are at least partially received between opposite halves of the rollers of the entry roller assembly. The print engine is configured to print ink followed by a fixative onto the print media, with the feed assemblies configured to feed the media through the housing at a predetermined rate so that said media only leaves the housing when the fixative has dried.

Claims (10)

1. A modular printer comprising:

a housing having an upper and lower cover, with a first side wall having an air duct with an air inlet, and a second side wall defining air exit vents, so that warm air can be ducted over print media passing through the housing;

entry and exit media feed roller assemblies located at opposite ends of the housing for feeding the print media through the housing, each roller assembly having a pair of rollers with a print media feed path interposed between the rollers; and

a print engine having two opposing arcuate printheads, each with a radius of curvature which approximates a radius of the rollers, the printheads being at least partially received between opposite halves of the rollers of the entry roller assembly, said print engine configured to print ink followed by a fixative onto the print media, the feed assemblies configured to feed the media through the housing at a predetermined rate so that said media only leaves the housing when the fixative has dried.

2. The modular printer of claim 1 , wherein a spacing between the print engine and the exit roller assembly is approximately one meter to allow for a one second warm-set ink drying time at a media speed of approximately 0.8 meters per second.

3. The modular printer of claim 1 , having a print media loading mechanism including a pair of opposed endless belts between the entry and exit media feed rollers.

4. The modular printer of claim 3 , wherein the belts are foraminous to enable warm air ducted through the duct to be blown through the belts over both surfaces of the print media after printing.

5. The modular printer of claim 3 , wherein each belt passes around a pair of spaced rollers held captive and operatively vertically displaceable in slides mounted on a frame of the printer.

6. The modular printer of claim 5 , wherein each roller is mounted at one end of an arm with opposed ends of each arm connected at a common pivot point to a traverser block, so that the arms are connected to their associated traverser block scissors-fashion.

7. The modular printer of claim 6 , wherein each traverser block is mounted on a worm screw rotatably driven by a motor.
