N 3 -Heteroaryl substituted triazoles and N 5 -heteroaryl substituted triazoles and pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds are disclosed as being useful in inhibiting the activity of the receptor protein tyrosine kinase Axl. Methods of using the compounds in treating diseases or conditions associated with Axl activity are also disclosed.

2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein:

1-(isoquinolin-1-yl)-N 3 -(2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine;
1-(6-chloroquinazolin-4-yl)-N 3 -(2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine;
1-(6,7-dimethoxyquinazoline-4-yl)-N 3 -(4,5-dihydro-1H-benzo[b]azepin-2(3H)-on-8-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine;
1-(6,7-dimethoxyquinazoline-4-yl)-N 3 -(2-(1-(4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)piperazin-1-yl)oxomethyl)benzo[b]thiophen-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine.
5. The compound of claim 2 , wherein:

6. The compound of claim 5 which is 1-(6-phenylpyrimidine-4-yl)-N 3 (3-methyl-2-(4-pyrrolidin-1-ylpiperdin-1-yl)pyridine-5-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine.

1-(6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[4,5]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-yl)-N3-(6-(4-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)piperidin-1-yl)-5-methylpyridin-3-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine.
15. The compound of claim 2 , wherein:

1-(6,7-dimethoxyquinazoline-4-yl)-N3-(7-cyclopentyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-pyrido[3,2-d]azepin-3-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3,5-diamine.

23. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient and a compound of formula (Ia):

each R 14 is independently an optionally substituted straight or branched alkylene chain;

24. A method of inhibiting Axl catalytic activity in a mammal, wherein the method comprises administering to the mammal an effective amount of a compound of claim 1 ; as an isolated stereoisomer or a mixture thereof, or as a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
