Abstract

Prosthetic intervertebral discs and methods for using the same are described. The subject prosthetic discs include upper and lower endplates separated by a compressible core member. The prosthetic discs described herein include one-piece, two-piece, three-piece, and four-piece structures. The subject prosthetic discs exhibit stiffness in the vertical direction, torsional stiffness, bending stiffness in the saggital plane, and bending stiffness in the front plane, where the degree of these features can be controlled independently by adjusting the components of the discs. The interface mechanism between the endplates and the core members of several embodiments of the described prosthetic discs enables a very easy surgical operation for implantation.

Claims (28)

1. A method for implanting a prosthetic intervertebral disc between two adjacent vertebral bodies, comprising:

providing a prosthetic intervertebral disc comprising: a first endplate having a plurality of slots; a second endplate having a plurality of slots; a compressible core member positioned between said first and second endplates, said core member comprising at least one fiber extending through said slots of said first endplate and through said slots of said second end plate and whereby said first and second endplates are held together and said first and second endplates and said core member are held together by the at least one fiber in a manner by which the prosthetic intervertebral disc substantially mimics the functional characteristics of a natural intervertebral disc; and

inserting said disc between said vertebral bodies while maintaining said endplates in a substantially parallel relationship.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies simultaneously prior to inserting said disc.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said preparing step comprises forming at least one indentation in each of the inner surfaces.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said preparing step comprises forming at least one groove in each of the inner surfaces.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

providing a second intervertebral disc comprising: a first endplate having a plurality of slots; a second endplate having a plurality of slots; a compressible core member positioned between said first and second endplates, said core member comprising at least one fiber extending through said slots of said first endplate and through said slots of said second end plate and whereby said first and second endplates are held together and said first and second endplates and said core member are held together by the at least one fiber in a manner by which the second prosthetic intervertebral disc substantially mimics the functional characteristics of a natural intervertebral disc; and wherein said inserting step comprises inserting said first disc adjacent a lateral portion of said vertebral bodies and inserting said second disc adjacent an opposing lateral portion of said vertebral bodies.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein said inserting is performed from a posterior approach.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising a step of deploying at least one fixation member from an outer surface of at least one endplate subsequently to said inserting step.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies prior to inserting said disc.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one indentation in each of said inner surfaces.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one groove in each of said inner surfaces.

11. A method for implanting a prosthetic intervertebral disc between two adjacent vertebral bodies, comprising:

providing a prosthetic intervertebral disc comprising: a first endplate including a region comprising a plurality of slots through which an at least one fiber extends between and engages the first end plate and a second end plate; a second endplate plate including a region comprising a plurality of slots through which the at least one fiber extends between and engages the first end plate and the second end plate; a compressible core member positioned between said first and second endplates, said core member comprising said at least one fiber extending between and engaged with said first and second endplate slots whereby said endplates and said core member are held together in a manner by which the prosthetic intervertebral disc substantially mimics the functional characteristics of a natural intervertebral disc; and

inserting said disc between said vertebral bodies while maintaining said endplates in a substantially parallel relationship.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies prior to inserting said disc.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises preparing said surfaces simultaneously prior to inserting said disc.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one indentation in each of said inner surfaces.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one groove in each of said inner surfaces.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one indentation in each of said inner surfaces.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the step of preparing the inner surfaces of both vertebral bodies comprises forming at least one groove in each of said inner surfaces.

18. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

providing a second intervertebral disc comprising: a first endplate including a region comprising a plurality of slots through which an at least one fiber extends between and engages the first end plate and a second end plate; a second endplate plate including a region comprising a plurality of slots through which the at least one fiber extends between and engages the first end plate and the second end plate; a compressible core member positioned between said first and second endplates, said core member comprising the at least one fiber extending between and engaged with said first and second endplate slots whereby said endplates and said core member are held together in a manner by which the prosthetic intervertebral disc substantially mimics the functional characteristics of a natural intervertebral disc; and

wherein said inserting step comprises inserting said first disc adjacent a lateral portion of said vertebral bodies and

inserting said second disc adjacent an opposing lateral portion of said vertebral bodies.

19. The method of claim 11 wherein said inserting is performed from a posterior approach.

20. The method of claim 11 further comprising deploying at least one fixation member from an outer surface of at least one endplate subsequently to said inserting.
