Abstract

An ejection assembly for a printer is provided, the ejection assembly being disposed downstream of a print head in order to receive web from the print head. The ejection assembly can include an ejection roller and a door having a closed configuration and an open configuration. The door can be biased toward the closed configuration and toward the ejection roller. Upon rotation of the ejection roller, the ejection roller can force the door from the closed configuration to the open configuration and can eject web past the door from the printer. In some embodiments, the ejection roller is rotated one full cycle, the ejection roller permits accumulation of web received from the print head and subsequently forces the door from the closed configuration to the open configuration and ejects the accumulated web past the door from the printer. Also provided are a corresponding printer and method.

Claims (24)

1. A printer comprising:

a bi-directional motor structured to rotate in opposing first and second directions;

a print head;

a drive shaft coupled to the bi-directional motor;

a first one-way clutch mounted to the drive shaft;

a drive roller coupled to the first one-way clutch, wherein the drive roller advances a web toward the print head upon rotation of the bi-directional motor in the first direction;

a second one-way clutch mounted to the drive shaft;

a cutter coupled to the second one-way clutch for cutting the web upon rotation of the bi-directional motor in the second direction;

an ejection roller coupled to the second one-way clutch, wherein the ejection roller defines a rotational axis and a cross sectional shape having a non-uniform radius as measured from the rotational axis, wherein the non-uniform cross sectional shape of the ejection roller defines a maximum radius as measured from the rotational axis, and wherein the ejection roller ejects the web at least partially from the printer in conjunction with the web being cut by the cutter when the drive shaft is rotated in the second direction by the bi-directional motor; and

a door having a closed position and an open position, wherein the door is biased in the closed position and disposed proximate the ejection roller, and wherein the door is forced into the open position by the ejection roller when the door is contacted by an area of the ejection roller disposed generally proximate the maximum radius of the ejection roller.

2. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the ejection roller defines a D-shaped cross section.

3. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein rotation of the bi-directional motor in the first direction operates to advance the web toward the print head and collect a portion of the web downstream of the print head, and rotation of the bi-directional motor in the second direction operates to cut and eject from the printer at least part of the portion of the web collected downstream of the print head.

4. A printer according to claim 3 , wherein the door that is at least partially opened by the ejection roller as the ejection roller ejects the at least part of the collected web portion.

5. A printer according to claim 4 , wherein the door maintains the web against the ejection roller as the ejection roller ejects at least part of the web.

6. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein said ejection roller is configured to eject web at least partially from the printer upon rotation of the bi-directional motor in the second direction and subsequent to being cut by the cutter.

7. A printer comprising:

a bi-directional motor structured to rotate in opposing first and second directions;

a print head;

a drive roller coupled to the bi-directional motor for advancing a web toward the print head upon rotation of the bi-directional motor in the first direction;

a cutter coupled to the bi-directional motor for cutting web upon rotation of the bi-directional motor in the second direction;

an ejection roller coupled to the bi-directional motor for ejecting web at least partially from the printer in conjunction with being cut by the cutter, wherein the ejection roller defines a rotational axis and a cross sectional shape having a non-uniform radius as measured from the rotational axis; and

a door having a closed position and an open position, wherein the door is biased in the closed position and disposed proximate the ejection roller, wherein the non-uniform cross sectional shape of the ejection roller defines a maximum radius as measured from the rotational axis, and wherein the door is forced in to the open position by the ejection roller when the door is contacted by an area of the ejection roller disposed generally proximate the maximum radius of the ejection roller.

8. A printer according to claim 7 , wherein the ejection roller defines a D-shaped cross section.

9. A printer according to claim 7 , wherein rotation of the bi-directional motor in the first direction operates to advance the web toward the print head and collect a portion of the web downstream of the print head, and rotation of the bi-directional motor in the second direction operates to cut and eject from the printer at least part of the portion of the web collected downstream of the print head.
