Methods of obtaining photoactive coatings and/or anatase crystalline phase of titanium oxides
View Patent ↗A method of making a photoactive coating includes depositing a first coating material containing zirconium oxide over at least a portion of a substrate and depositing a second coating material containing titanium oxide over at least a portion of the first coating material to provide a coated substrate. At least one of the first and second coating materials is deposited by pyrolytic deposition.
1. A method of making a transparency, comprising the steps of:
providing a glass substrate having at least one surface;
pyrolytically depositing a first continuous film comprising zirconium oxide in the cubic, baddeleyite or orthorhombic crystalline phase directly on substantially all of the glass substrate surface; and
pyrolytically depositing a second continuous photocatalytic film comprising a material selected from at least one metal oxide or semiconductor metal oxide on substantially all of the first film.
2. The method of claim 1 , including heating the substrate to a temperature of at least 400° C. prior to depositing the first film.
3. The method of claim 1 , including heating the substrate to a temperature of at least 600° C. prior to depositing the first film.
4. The method of claim 1 , including heating the substrate such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 400° C. prior to at the beginning of the second depositing step.
5. The method of claim 1 , including heating the substrate such that the substrate has a temperature of at least 600° C. at the beginning of the second depositing step.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first continuous film has a dry film thickness greater than 100 Å.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first continuous film has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å to 500 Å.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second continuous film has a dry film thickness greater than 100 Å.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second continuous film has a dry film thickness in the range of 100 Å to 500 Å.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second continuous layer is in direct contact with the first continuous layer.
11. A method of making a transparency, comprising:
providing a glass substrate having at least one surface;
pyrolytically depositing a first continuous layer comprising zirconium oxide in the cubic, baddeleylte or orthorhombic crystalline phase directly on substantially all of the substrate; and
pyrolytically depositing a second continuous photocatalytic layer comprising titanium oxide on substantially all of the first layer.
12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first layer has a thickness greater than 100 Å.
13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second layer is in direct contact with the first layer.
14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second layer has a thickness greater than 100 Å.
15. A method of making a coated substrate, comprising: providing a glass substrate having at least one surface; pyrolytically depositing a first continuous layer comprising zirconium oxide in the cubic, baddeleyite or orthorhombic crystalline phase in contact with at least a portion of the glass substrate surface; and
depositing a second continuous photocatalytic layer comprising a material selected from at least one metal oxide or semiconductor metal oxide on substantially all of the first layer.
