Abstract

A method and system for effecting adaptive autofocusing, such as for a camera, are disclosed. The method can comprise obtaining focusing information, such as historic focusing actuator current or voltage information or focusing lens position information, storing the focusing information, and subsequently using the focusing information to facilitate a determination of a best position of a focusing lens during a focusing process. The use of such focusing information can result in a better choice for the next focusing lens position to be tested, such that the focusing process can be performed more rapidly. The use of such focusing information can also mitigate the undesirable effects of production variations and/or component wear.

Claims (18)

1. A method for focusing, the method comprising:

storing image sharpness scores and corresponding focus actuator drive signals for a plurality of previous photographs to form stored data;

for a current photograph, determining a current image sharpness score and a corresponding current image focus actuator drive signal;

comparing the current image sharpness score and the current image focus actuator drive signal to the stored data to determine an initial focus actuator drive signal; and

driving a focus actuator according to the initial focus actuator drive signal to achieve an initial focus lens position for a focus lens.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising varying a position of the focus lens through a search range that includes the initial focus lens position to determine a best focus for the current photograph.

3. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the initial focus lens position is at the center of the search range.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein a type for the previous photographs is selected from the group consisting of macro photographs, photographs having a focus at approximately 50 centimeters, photographs having a focus at approximately 100 centimeters, photographs having a focus at approximately a meter, photographs having a focus at approximately 5 meters, photographs having a focus at approximately 10 meters, and photographs having a focus at infinity.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the actuator drive signal is a current.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the actuator drive signal is a voltage.

7. A camera comprising:

a focusing lens;

a focus actuator for driving the focusing lens according to an actuator drive signal;

a memory for storing image data including image sharpness scores and corresponding actuator drive signals for a plurality of previous photographs; and

a processor configured to compare a current sharpness score and a corresponding current focus actuator drive signal for a current photograph to the stored image data to determine to determine an initial focus actuator drive signal.

8. The camera of claim 7 , wherein the processor is further configured to command a focus actuator driver to drive the focus actuator with the initial focus actuator drive signal to achieve an initial focusing lens position.

9. The camera of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to command the focus actuator driver to vary a position for a focusing lens through an autofocus search range that includes the initial focusing lens position.

10. The camera of claim 9 , wherein the initial focusing lens position is at a center of the search range.
