Abstract

A computer system which includes one or more wireless interface devices that are adapted to communicate with a remote host over a radio link. Each of the wireless interface devices is a pen-based device which includes an ink field in which pen events are translated into pen data packets and transmitted to the remote host over the radio link. Local inking is provided at the wireless interface device in order to maintain the pen paradigm in essentially real time.

Claims (50)

1. A method of updating a flash memory device in a wireless device having a computer system and a power management subsystem using a wireless link, comprising:

receiving data over said wireless link at a wireless device including said flash memory device;

updating said flash memory device based on said received data; and

disabling said power management subsystem of said wireless device after updating of said flash memory device is initiated .

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said disabling step comprises disabling said power management subsystem prior to the receiving of the data over the wireless link.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said disabling step comprises disabling said power management subsystem during the updating of the flash memory device.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said step of updating comprises updating software in said flash memory device.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said receiving step comprises receiving data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a button on a user interface of said wireless device.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein said receiving step comprises receiving data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a graphical button on a display of said wireless device.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said disabling step includes preventing said wireless device from going into reduced power state.

8. A wireless device, comprising:

a receiver that receives data over a wireless link;

a computer system having a power management subsystem; and a controller that updates a flash memory device based on said received data and disables said power management subsystem after update of said flash memory device is initiated .

9. The wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein the power management subsystem is disabled prior to the receiving of the data over the wireless link.

10. The wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein the power management subsystem is disabled during the updating of the flash memory.

11. The wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein said controller updates software in said flash memory device.

12. The wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein said receiver receives said data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a button on a user interface.

13. The wireless device according to claim 12 , wherein the button is a graphical button on display.

14. The wireless device according to claim 8 , wherein said controller is configured to prevent said wireless device from going into reduced power state after update of said flash memory device is initiated.

15. A wireless device, comprising:

receiving means for receiving data over a wireless link; and

controlling means for updating a flash memory device based on the received data and for disabling a power management of the wireless device after updating of the flash memory initiated.

16. A method of updating a flash memory device using a wireless link, comprising:

receiving data over a wireless link;

updating a flash memory device of the wireless device based on the received data; and

disabling an interrupt subsystem of the wireless device after updating of the flash memory device is initiated.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein said updating step comprises updating software in said flash memory device.

18. The method according to claim 16 , wherein said receiving step comprises receiving data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a button on a user interface-on said wireless device.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein said receiving step comprises receiving data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a graphical button on a display of said wireless device.

20. A wireless device, comprising:

a computer system having an interrupt subsystem;

a receiver that receives data over a wireless link; and

a controller that updates a flash memory based on the received data and disables said interrupt subsystem after updating of the flash memory device is initiated.

21. The wireless device according to claim 20 , wherein said controller updates software in said flash memory device.

22. The wireless device according to claim 20 , wherein said receiver receives said data over the wireless link in response to a selection of a button on a user interface.

23. The wireless device according to claim 22 , wherein the button is a graphical button on a display.

24. A wireless device for a wireless device, comprising:

receiving means for receiving data over a wireless link; and

controlling means for updating a flash memory of the wireless device based on the received data and for disabling an interrupt subsystem after updating of the flash memory device is initiated.

25. A control circuit for use with a computer system having a power management subsystem , a wireless receiver for receiving data over a wireless link and a flash memory device, the control circuit comprising:

a controller configured to update said flash memory device based on said received data and disable said power management subsystem after update of said flash memory device is initiated.

26. The control circuit according to claim 25 , wherein said controller is configured to disable said power management subsystem prior to data being received over said wireless link.

27. The control circuit according to claim 25 , wherein the controller is configured to disable said power management subsystem during the updating of said flash memory.

28. The control circuit according to claim 25 , wherein said controller is configured to control receipt of data over said wireless link.

29. The control circuit according to claim 25 , wherein said controller is configured such that control of the receipt of data over said wireless link is user selectable.

30. The control circuit according to claim 25 , wherein said controller is configured to prevent said receiver from going into reduced power state after update of said flash memory device is initiated.

31. A control circuit for use with a computer system having a power management subsystem, an interrupt subsystem, a wireless receiver for receiving data over a wireless link and a flash memory device the control circuit comprising:

a controller configured to update said flash memory device based on said received data and disable said interrupt subsystem after update of said flash memory device is initiated.

32. The control circuit according to claim 31 , wherein said controller is configured to control receipt of data over said wireless link.

33. The control circuit according to claim 31 , wherein said controller is configured such that control of the receipt of data over said wireless link is user selectable.
