Abstract

A method, system and apparatus using hybrid automatic repeat-request (HARQ) to enhance a system throughput in a transmit diversity system. Embodiments of the present invention may include a method including receiving a quality-indication signal such as a HARQ from the base station, calculating a complex weighting based on the quality-indication signal, modifying a pre-transmission signal based on the complex weighting to produce a plurality of modified pre-transmission signals, each modified pre-transmission signal from the plurality modified pre-transmission signals being uniquely associated with an antenna element from a plurality antenna elements of a mobile device, and sending the plurality of modified pre-transmission signals from the plurality of antenna elements to produce an effective combined transmitted signal, the complex weighting being associated with a total power of the transmitted signal and at least one from a phase rotation and a power ratio associated with each antenna element from the plurality of antenna elements.

Claims (18)

1. A method of communicating between a mobile communication device having a plurality of antenna elements and a base station via a communication link comprising:

receiving a first quality indication signal from the base station;

calculating a first complex weighting based on said first quality indication signal;

selecting one complex weighting between said first complex weighting and a second complex weighting based at least in part on said first quality indication signal;

modifying a pre-transmission signal based at least on the selected complex weighting to produce a plurality of modified pre-transmission signals;

associating each of said plurality of modified pre-transmission signals with a respective antenna element of the plurality of antenna elements;

sending from said mobile communication device said plurality of modified pre-transmission signals from said respective plurality of antenna elements, thereby forming a combined transmitted signal; and

prior to receiving said first quality indication signal from the base station:

receiving a second quality indication signal from the base station;

calculating said second complex weighting based on said second quality indication signal; and

storing said second complex weighting wherein said first quality indication signal is different from said second quality indication signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first quality indication signal is based on at least one hybrid automatic repeat-request (HARQ) signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second quality indication signal is a power control indicator.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying said pre-transmission signal based at least on said selected complex weighting comprises modifying said pre-transmission signal with respect to at least one of a phase difference and a power ratio based on said selected complex weighting to produce said plurality of modified pre-transmission signals.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein modifying said pre-transmission signal comprises:

modifying said pre-transmission signal in a first direction when the stored second complex weighting is selected; and

modifying said pre-transmission signal in second direction opposite said first direction when the calculated first complex weighting is selected.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein said second quality indication signal is a power control indicator.
