Abstract

Apparatus for treating a subject suffering from spontaneous atrial fibrillation includes an electrode device, adapted to be coupled to a vagus nerve of the subject, and a control unit, adapted to drive the electrode device to apply an electrical current to the vagus nerve, and to configure the current to maintain the spontaneous AF for at least about 24 hours, so as to modify blood flow within the atria and reduce risk of thromboembolic events.

Claims (25)

1. A treatment method, comprising:

identifying a subject suffering from non-artificially-induced spontaneous atrial fibrillation (AF);

applying an electrical current to a vagus nerve of the subject; and

treating the subject by configuring the current to maintain the non-artificially-induced spontaneous AF for at least about 24 hours, by applying the current in a plurality of bursts in respective cardiac cycles of the subject, each of which bursts includes between 1 and 8 pulses and has a pulse repetition interval of between 5 and 90 milliseconds, and each of which pulses has a duration of between 1 and 3 milliseconds and an amplitude of between 2 and 5 milliamps.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein configuring the current comprises setting the pulse duration to be between about 2 and about 3 milliseconds.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein applying the current comprises setting a timing within a cardiac cycle of the applying of the current.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein applying the current comprises configuring the current to control a ventricular response.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein applying the current comprises detecting the AF using a sensor, and applying the current responsively to the detecting.

6. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising attempting cardioversion after terminating maintaining the AF at the end of the period.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein treating the subject comprises preventing naturally-occurring cardioversion by configuring the current to maintain the spontaneous AF.

8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein treating the subject comprises reducing a risk of thromboembolic events by configuring the current to maintain the spontaneous AF.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein identifying comprises making an initial diagnosis of the AF more than 48 hours after initiation of the AF.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein identifying comprises making an initial diagnosis of the AF an unknown amount of time after initiation of the AF.

A method according to claim 1 , wherein treating comprises treating the subject by configuring the current to maintain the non-artificially-induced spontaneous AF during a period of between about one day and about three weeks, and administering anticoagulation drug therapy to the patient while maintaining the spontaneous AF during the period.

12. Apparatus for treating a subject suffering from non-artificially-induced spontaneous atrial fibrillation (AF), comprising:

an electrode device, configured to be coupled to a vagus nerve of the subject;

a sensor configured to detect the non-artificially-induced spontaneous AF and generate a sensor signal responsive thereto; and

a control unit, configured to:

receive the sensor signal, and, responsively thereto, drive the electrode device to apply an electrical current to the vagus nerve, and

configure the current to maintain the non-artificially-induced spontaneous AF for at least about 24 hours, so as to treat the subject, by applying the current in a plurality of bursts in respective cardiac cycles of the subject, each of which bursts includes between 1 and 8 pulses and has a pulse repetition interval of between 5 and 90 milliseconds, and each of which pulses has a duration of between 1 and 3 milliseconds and an amplitude of between 2 and 5 milliamps.

13. Apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the control unit is configured to configure the current to maintain the AF for at least about three weeks.

Apparatus according to claim 12 , comprising a sensor configured to detect normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and generate a sensor signal responsive thereto, and wherein the control unit is configured to receive the sensor signal, and to drive the electrode device to apply the current responsive to the sensor signal.

15. Apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the control unit is configured to set the pulse duration to be between about 2 and about 3 milliseconds.

16. Apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the control unit is configured to set a timing within a cardiac cycle of the application of the current.

17. Apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the control unit is configured to configure the current to control a ventricular response.
