Abstract

Apparatus is provided for applying current to a nerve, including a housing, configured to be placed in a vicinity of the nerve. At least one electrode is fixed to the housing such that the at least one electrode does not come in direct physical contact with the nerve when the housing is placed in the vicinity of the nerve, and such that the electrode surrounds greater than 180 degrees of a circumference of the nerve after the placement of the housing. Two end insulating elements are fixed to the housing such that the at least one electrode is between the end insulating elements, and the end insulating elements come in contact or practically in contact with the nerve when the housing is placed in the vicinity of the nerve. Other embodiments are also described.

Claims (14)

1. Apparatus for applying current to a nerve, comprising an electrode assembly, which comprises:

a housing, adapted to be placed completely around the nerve, the housing shaped so as to define an outer surface and a plurality of chambers, including first and second chambers, that define respective open spaces between the housing and the nerve when the housing is placed around the nerve;

one or more electrodes, fixed to the housing, which electrodes comprise an anode and a cathode, one of which is fixed to the housing within the first chamber, and the other of which is fixed to the housing within the second chamber; and

a control unit, which is configured to drive a cathodic current through the cathode, and an anodal current through the anode,

wherein the electrode assembly is shaped so as to define a plurality of openings through which the nerve passes when the housing is placed around the nerve, and

wherein, in addition to the openings of the electrode assembly through which the nerve passes, the outer surface of the housing is shaped so as to define one or more holes through to the first chamber, and no holes through to the second chamber, which holes through to the first chamber are configured to allow passage of biological materials therethrough to the first chamber.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the outer surface is shaped so as to define the one or more holes into only the first chamber.

3. A method comprising:

providing an electrode assembly including (a) a housing shaped so as to define an outer surface and (b) one or more electrodes, fixed to the housing; and

placing the housing completely around a nerve, such that the housing defines a plurality of chambers, including first and second chambers, that define respective open spaces between the housing and the nerve, and the electrode assembly defines a plurality of openings through which the nerve passes,

wherein, in addition to the openings of electrode assembly through which the nerve passes, the outer surface of the housing is shaped so as to define one or more holes through to the first chamber, and no holes through to the second chamber, which holes through to the first chamber are configured to allow passage of biological materials therethrough to the first chamber,

wherein the electrodes include an anode and a cathode, one of which is fixed to the housing within the first chamber, and the other of which is fixed to the housing within the second chamber, and

further comprising driving a cathodic current through the cathode, and an anodal current through the anode.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein providing the electrode assembly comprises providing the electrode assembly in which the outer surface is shaped so as to define the one or more holes into only the first chamber.
