Abstract

The disclosure is directed to catheter devices and methods for controlled application of irradiation to tissue adjacent a body site, such as cavity after removal of tissue, e.g. cancer. The catheter device includes an inflatable balloon having at least two layers. The inflatable balloon has an expansion of more than 25% and less than 200% when inflated from the un-inflated condition to a turgid condition, preferably more than 50% and less than 150%. In the turgid condition the polymeric material(s) of the balloon layers are at or near the elastic limit of the balloon layer material. The balloon may contain or be formed of or be coated with radiopaque material to facilitate positional or symmetry verification.

Claims (17)

1. A method for irradiating tissue at least in part surrounding a body cavity of a patient, comprising:

a. providing a catheter device having an elongate shaft with a distal shaft portion, a treatment location at the distal shaft portion and a multilayered balloon having a first layer separate from, inside, and in contact with a second layer around an entire periphery of the first layer, and each of the first layer and the second layer being secured to the distal shaft portion and configured to surround the treatment location in an as formed configuration;

b. providing a radiation source which is configured to be disposed in the treatment location of the treatment device;

c. inserting the device into the patient until the treatment location on the distal shaft portion is disposed within the body cavity to be radiated;

d. inflating the multilayered balloon on the distal shaft portion to expand the balloon at least 25% but less than 200% from the as formed condition to a turgid condition; and

e. positioning the radiation source in the treatment location.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon is inflated to a predetermined size and shape.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon is inflated to an expansion less than 175% from the as formed configuration to the turgid condition.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon is inflated to an expansion of about 50% to about 150% from the as formed condition to the turgid condition.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon has an individual thickness of about 0.0003 to about 0.006 inch in an un-inflated condition.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon has an individual thickness of about 0.001 to about 0.002 inch.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein a total combined thickness of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon is about 0.0006 to about 0.012 inch.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein a total combined thickness of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon is about 0.002 to about 0.004 inch.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon comprises radiopaque material.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the material of at least one of the multilayered balloon layers has radiopaque material incorporated therein.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the radiopaque material is a powdered metallic material.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the multilayered balloon layers has a surface coated with radiopaque material.
