Abstract

Architectures and techniques for treating conditions of the eye, such as presbyopia, utilize sources of treatment energy, such as electromagnetic energy emitting devices, to implement non-corneal manipulations. According to these devices and methods, the sources of treatment energy are activated to direct energy onto parts of the eye, such as the conjunctiva and sclera, to treat presbyopia. The treatments can affect at least one property of the eye and enhance an accommodation of the eye.

Claims (44)

1. A method for treating an eye in need of one or more of a physiological and a vision correction, the method comprising:

applying coloring to one or more treatment areas of the eye; and

delivering treatment energy to form one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas, each tissue treatment being disposed between or adjacent to, but not entirely overlapping, one or more rectus muscles of the eye, wherein the one or more tissue treatments comprises (a) a first grouping in a first area between a first and a second rectus muscle, (b) a second grouping in a second area between the second and a third rectus muscle, (c) a third grouping in a third area between the third and a fourth rectus muscle, and (d) a fourth grouping in a fourth area between the fourth and the first rectus muscle.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying a colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying colored light, which has a colored appearance as perceived by a human eye, to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying a colored light having a wavelength that causes a color of the one or more treatment areas to be more readily discernable by the eye of a human user relative to the discernability of the same color in lighting conditions excluding the colored light.

5. The method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying colored light simultaneously with the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

6. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying black light to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying black light that causes white areas or features of the one or more treatment areas to be more readily discernable by the eye of a human user relative to the discernability of the white areas or features in lighting conditions excluding the black light.

8. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying black light simultaneously with the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying a UV light thereby causing a part of the one or more treatment areas to be more readily discernable by the eye of a human user relative to the discernability of the same part in lighting conditions excluding the UV light.

10. The method as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying UV light simultaneously with the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying a colored light having a wavelength that causes blue colors of the one or more treatment areas to be more readily discernable by the eye of a human user relative to the discernability of blue colors in lighting conditions excluding the colored light.

12. The method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying colored light simultaneously with the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

13. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying a colored fluid and a colored light.

14. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas is preceded by reducing an intensity or brightness of background or ambient light in a vicinity of the eye in need of the one or more of a physiological and a vision correction.

15. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas is performed by a device.

16. The method as set forth in claim 15 , wherein:

the applying of coloring comprises applying a colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas of the eye; and

the device emits electromagnetic energy having a wavelength that is highly absorbed by a color of the colored fluid.

17. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying a colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas of the eye prior to the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

18. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring comprises applying a dye to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

19. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying a colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas to generate one or more colored treatment areas and, subsequently, applying a colored light; and

the colored light is applied simultaneously with the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas.

20. The method as set forth in claim 19 , wherein the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas comprises delivering treatment energy in a form of infrared light.

21. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of coloring to the one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises:

applying a colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas to generate one or more colored treatment areas; and

applying a colored light, the colored light having a wavelength that causes a color of the one or more colored treatment areas to be more readily discernable to the eye of a human relative to the discernability of the one or more colored treatment areas in lighting conditions excluding the colored light.

The method as set forth in claim 21 , wherein the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas is preceded by reducing an intensity or brightness of background or ambient light in a vicinity of the eye in need of the one or more of a physiological and a vision correction.

23. The method as set forth in claim 21 , wherein the applying of a colored fluid comprises applying a dye to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

24. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of a coloring comprises applying a yellow fluid to one or more treatment areas of a sclera of the eye.

25. The method as set forth in claim 24 , wherein the applying is followed by a user identifying one or more strictures of the eye in need of the one or more of a physiological and a vision correction.

26. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the applying of a coloring comprises applying a red or green colored fluid to the one or more treatment areas of the eye.

27. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the delivering comprises ablating one or more of a conjunctiva and a sclera of the eye.

28. The method as set forth in claim 27 , wherein the delivering comprises delivering lower intensity tissue treatment energies on the conjunctiva than on the sclera.

29. The method as set forth in claim 27 , wherein the tissue treatments are formed to depths between about 90% and 99% of a thickness of a sclera of the eye.

30. The method as set forth in claim 27 , wherein the tissue treatments comprise relatively small perforations ranging from about 1 micron to about 5 microns in diameter.

31. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more tissue treatments comprise one or more relatively sparsely-populated groupings of tissue treatments that are formed during an initial procedure; and

during one or more follow-up procedures one or more additional tissue treatments are delivered to alter the one or more relatively sparsely-populated groupings of tissue treatments.

32. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the applying of coloring to one or more treatment areas of the eye comprises applying color to a portion of the eye, making it a target chromoform; and

the delivering of treatment energy to form the one or more tissue treatments in the one or more treatment areas comprises selectively treating the portion with electromagnetic energy that is absorbed by the portion to a greater degree, relative to a degree at which the portion would absorb the electromagnetic energy without the application of color.
