Abstract

An asset, object, person or animal monitoring system and associated method for monitoring assets, objects, people or animals utilizing impulse radio techniques. The asset, object, person or animal monitoring system of the present invention can vary the duty cycles of the impulse radio transmitters, by both manual and automatic means, to adapt to varied requirements.

Claims (35)

1. A system for monitoring an asset, object, person, or animal in a hospital, comprising:

a first ultra wideband radio associated with said asset, object, person, or animal in said hospital, said first ultra wideband radio transmitting, during at least one transmission interval, ultra wideband signals; and

at least one second ultra wideband radio, said at least one second ultra wideband radio receiving said ultra wideband signals, said ultra wideband signals conveying information about said asset, object, person, or animal in said hospital.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensor associated with said asset, object, person, or animal, said sensor providing sensor information to said first ultra wideband radio.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein said sensor information comprises at least one of blood pressure information, EKG information, breathing information, or medical parameters.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a wireless switch activator, said wireless switch activator being used to activate said first ultra wideband radio when said first ultra wideband radio is within a defined proximity to an entrance to a structure.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein said wireless switch activate is used to set the duty cycle of said first ultra wideband radio.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said at least one second ultra wideband radio further comprises a plurality of second ultra wideband radios, said plurality of second ultra wideband radios being used to determine a position of said first ultra wideband radio.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein said position of said first ultra wideband radio is determined using ultra wideband position determination techniques.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a global positioning system, said global positioning system being used to determine a position of said first ultra wideband radio.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein said asset, object, person, or animal comprises one of a hospital patient or a piece of medical equipment.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a monitoring system associated with said second ultra wideband radio.

11. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a central station associated with said second ultra wideband radio.

12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a identification code scanning device associated with said asset, object, person, or animal, said identification code scanning device providing code information to said first ultra wideband radio.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein said ultra wideband signals convey said identification code information.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one additional communications means associated with said asset, object, person, or animal.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein said at least one additional communications means comprises at least one of a satellite technology, a radio frequency technology, an infra red technology, an audio technology, a soft radio technology, a cellular technology, a packet radio communications technology, a direct electrical connection, or a direct optical connection.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein said first ultra wideband radio and said second ultra wideband radio are time synchronized and the timing of said at least one transmission interval is predetermined.

17. A system for monitoring an asset, object, person, or animal in a hospital, comprising:

a first ultra wideband radio associated with said asset, object, person, or animal, said first ultra wideband radio transmitting, during at least one transmission interval, ultra wideband signals from said first ultra wideband radio, said ultra wideband signals conveying information about the asset, object, person, or animal;

a plurality of second ultra wideband radios, said plurality of second ultra wideband radio receiving said ultra wideband signals; and

a monitoring station, said monitoring station monitoring said information about the asset, object, person, or animal.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein said monitoring station also monitors a position of said asset, object, person, or animal determined using ultra wideband position determination techniques.

19. A system for monitoring a position within a hospital of an asset, object, person, or animal, comprising:

a first ultra wideband radio associated with said asset, object, person, or animal, said first ultra wideband radio transmitting, during at least one transmission interval, ultra wideband signals from said first ultra wideband radio, said ultra wideband signals conveying information about the asset, object, person, or animal;

a plurality of second ultra wideband radios, said plurality of second ultra wideband radio receiving said ultra wideband signals; and

a processor for monitoring said position within said hospital of said asset, object, person, or animal and said information about the asset, object, person, or animal.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein said processor uses said information about the asset, object, person, or animal and ultra wideband position determination techniques to determine said position of said asset, object, person, or animal within said hospital.
