Abstract

A film supply apparatus supplying film in a foam-in-bag system having a film feeding device for feeding film from a film source to a location for bag formation, a bag forming apparatus, a foam material dispenser positioned for feeding foam material for reception in a bag of the bag forming apparatus, and a web tensioning system with a web tensioning driver in driving communication with the film source and which is in communication with a controller for monitoring the film feed and web tension states and directing adjustments in the web tension system. The web tensioning driver is arranged to move film backwards or in a direction opposite to a direction of film feed induced by the film feeding means and with the film source including a roll of film and the web tensioning system including a drive transmission in communication with the roll of film for rotational driving of the roll of film and also in communication with web tensioning driver. There is further featured a spindle support for supporting the roll of film and a roll film core drive insert.

Claims (81)

1. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a film feed roller set positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support,

a film feed driver in driving communication with said film feed roller set;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with said film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said film feed roller set, wherein said film source support includes a spindle for receiving a roll of film and said film source drive transmission includes a film source engagement member supported on said spindle, and wherein said film source engagement member includes a plurality of projections for engagement with a core insert of the film roll while supported on said spindle,

wherein said engagement member includes an annular ring having a plurality of circumferentially spaced projections separated by clearance areas, and said film supply apparatus further comprising a film roll with film core having a drive transmission core insert, said core insert comprising an annular ring with a plurality of projections and clearance spaces therebetween which are arranged for rotational driving transmission upon meshing with said annular ring of said engagement member.

2. The film supply apparatus of claim 1 wherein said film roll includes a non-drive core insert which is positioned at an opposite end of said film core and is in supporting contact with said spindle.

3. The film supply apparatus of claim 1 wherein said engagement member projections include tapered first contact extensions and base sections of greater thickness and having side walls for imparting rotational driving transmission to said film roll.

4. The film supply apparatus of claim 1 wherein said film feed driver includes an encoder and said film source driver includes an encoder, and said controller includes means for determining film roll diameter from data provided by said encoders.

5. The film supply apparatus of claim 1 wherein film is passed by a foam dispensing unit located downstream with respect to film travel direction from the film source and upstream of said film feed roller set.

The film supply apparatus of claim 5 wherein the film is a C-fold film and wherein said dispenser is arranged with respect to film feed travel such that a C-fold edge travels outward of a forward end of said dispenser and said feed roller set includes an edge sealer which joins free edge portions of the C-fold film following travel of said free edge portions along opposite side walls of said dispenser.

7. The film supply apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a bag forming apparatus which receives film supported by said film source support;

a foam material dispenser positioned for feeding foam material for reception in a bag of said bag forming apparatus; and

a controller for monitoring the film feed and web tension states and directing adjustments in said film web tensioning.

8. The film supply apparatus of claim 7 wherein said film source driver and film source drive transmission are arranged to move film backwards or in a direction opposite to a direction of film feed induced by said film feed driver and film feed roller set.

9. The film supply apparatus of claim 7 wherein the film source includes a roll of film and said film source drive transmission is in driving communication with the roll of film for rotational driving of the roll of film.

10. A method of supplying film to a foam-in-bag dispenser with the film supply apparatus of claim 1 comprising:

feeding film from a film source past a foam dispenser;

maintaining a tension state in the film being fed with the film source drive transmission which is in driving engagement with the film source by way of a driving connection to the film source.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising monitoring a state of web tension with a controller which receives input data based on driving information derived from both said film feed driver and said film source driver.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising shutting down said film source driver upon a sensed film run out based on a comparison of data input from said film feed driver and said film source driver.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said film source is a roll of film on a core and said film source engagement member meshes in rotational drive transmission fashion with said core.

14. A film roll core insert for use in the film supply apparatus of claim 1 , comprising an annular ring dimensioned for securement within a core end of a film roll and having rotation drive meshing means for rotational drive engagement with said film source drive transmission.

15. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a film feed roller set positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support,

a film feed driver in driving communication with said film feed roller set;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with said film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said film feed roller set, wherein said film source support includes a spindle for receiving a roll of film and said film source drive transmission includes a film source engagement member supported on said spindle, and wherein said spindle includes a central fixed spindle shaft and a sleeve assembly which rotates about said fixed spindle shaft and is further adjustable in length relative to said fixed spindle shaft to accommodate different length roll cores.

16. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a film feed roller set positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support,

a film feed driver in driving communication with said film feed roller set;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with said film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said film feed roller set, wherein said film source support includes a spindle for receiving a roll of film and said film source drive transmission including a film source engagement member supported on said spindle, and wherein said film source engagement member includes a plurality of projections for engagement with a core insert of the film roll while supported on said spindle;

a controller which is in communication with said film source driver and also with said film feed driver,

wherein said controller includes means for film tension adjustment by a comparison of a film feed state as induced by said feed roller set and a state of film status at the film source by way of an output from said film source driver, and wherein the controller provides constant measurement throughout the whole unwinding process without any shutdown or periodic intervals by a comparison of the film feed velocity to the angular velocity of the film roll while unwinding based on a current feedback and comparisons from each of the film feed driver and film source driver.

17. The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for inducing tension in said film during idle periods wherein said film feed roller set is not operating.

18. The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for decreasing the level of torque upon an initiation or start up of film feed by said film feed roller set.

19. The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for increasing the level of torque upon said film feed roller set discontinuing film feed drive.

20. The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for monitoring an amount of film left on the film roll and increases torque levels upon determining lowered amounts of film remaining on the film roll, and wherein said controller receives signals relative to a state of operation of each of said film feed driver and said film source drives and compares relative current values from each of said film feed driver and said film source driver during a determination of an amount of torque level increase.

21. The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for monitoring film status which includes means for generating a system shut down signal upon determination of a speed increase in said film source driver due to a removal of torque resistance upon film run out.

The film supply apparatus of claim 16 wherein said controller includes means for monitoring film status which includes means for generating a system shut down upon determination of a film jam based on a relationship determination of said feed roller set continuing movement but said film source driver sensing film tension levels deviating from a normal range of feed roller draw tensioning in the film.

23. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a film feed roller set positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support,

a film feed driver in driving communication with said film feed roller set;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with the film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said film feed roller set, the film supply apparatus further comprising a controller which is in communication with said film source driver and with said film feed driver and wherein the film source includes a film roll support for supporting a film roll and the controller determines film roll diameter by comparing film feed velocity via an output associated with said film feed driver to angular velocity of the film roll while unwinding via an output associated with said film source driver, and

wherein said controller includes means for film tension adjustment by a comparison of a film feed state as induced by said film feed roller set and a state of film status at the film source by way of an output from said film source driver, and wherein the controller provides constant measurement throughout the whole unwinding process without any shutdown or periodic intervals by a comparison of the film feed velocity to the angular velocity of the film roll while unwinding based on a current feedback and comparisons from each of the film feed driver and film source driver.

24. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a downstream film feed contact assembly positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support;

a film feed driver in driving communication with said downstream film feed contact assembly;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with the film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said downstream film feed contact assembly, and the film source includes a film roll with a core support for supporting film and said film supply apparatus further comprising an axial shift prevention locking assembly that is positioned at a free end of the film source support and which axial shift prevention locking assembly is positioned radially external to a film contact surface of the film roll core support, and

wherein the roll core support has a core insert that is positioned internally within the film roll core and said film source drive transmission extends internally within the core support and into meshing transmission engagement with the core insert.

25. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

a film source support for supporting a film source;

a film source driver;

a film source drive transmission in driving communication with said film source driver;

a downstream film feed contact assembly positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support;

a film feed driver in driving communication with said downstream film feed contact assembly;

said film source drive transmission being in driving communication with the film source supported on said film source support to provide film web tensioning in the film being drawn by said downstream film feed contact assembly, and the film source includes a film roll with a core support for supporting film and said film supply apparatus further comprising an axial shift prevention locking assembly that is positioned at a free end of the film source support and which axial shift prevention locking assembly is positioned radially external to a film contact surface of the film roll core support, and

wherein the core support has an exterior most surface with a maximum diameter that does not exceed the interior diameter of film received on the core support and a roll core insert received within a cavity of said core support, and wherein the film source drive transmission includes engagement projections that extend axially within the core support and into a meshing arrangement with receiving recesses provided in the roll core insert.

26. A film supply apparatus for use in a foam-in-bag dispenser, comprising:

support means for supporting a film source;

film source drive means for driving a film that is supported by said support means;

downstream film feed drive means in driving communication with the film and positioned downstream with respect to film travel to said film source support means;

said film source drive means, which is in driving communication with said film source supported on said support means, provides film web tensioning in the film being drawn downstream by said downstream film feed drive means, and the film source includes a film roll with a core support for supporting film and wherein said film source drive means includes engagement projections that mesh with a roll core insert received by the film roll core support, and said support means for supporting a film source further comprises an axial shift prevention locking assembly that maintains the engagement projections in meshing engagement with the roll core insert, and

wherein the roll core insert is positioned internally within the core support, and said engagement projections extend internally within the core support into meshing transmission engagement with the roll core insert.

27. The film supply apparatus of claim 26 wherein said plurality of projections extend axially into an interior cavity of the core insert of the film roll for meshing transmission engagement.

The film supply apparatus of claim 27 further comprising an axial shift prevention locking assembly which retains a meshing engagement between said projections and the film roll core insert and said axial shift prevention locking assembly comprises an extension that is supported by a spindle and positioned radially external to an outer roll support surface of the film roll core.

29. The film supply apparatus of claim 28 wherein said axial shift prevention locking assembly is adjustable between a film roll release blocking and non-blocking state and which extends axially external to a free end edge of the core insert.
