Abstract

A system and method for highly selective intrusion detection using a sparse array of time modulated ultra wideband (TM-UWB) radars. Two or more TM-UWB radars are arranged in a sparse array around the perimeter of a building. Each TM-UWB radar transmits ultra wideband pulses that illuminate the building and the surrounding area. Signal return data is processed to determine, among other things, whether an alarm condition has been triggered. High resolution radar images are formed that give an accurate picture of the inside of the building and the surrounding area. This image is used to detect motion in a highly selective manner and to track moving objects within the building and the surrounding area. Motion can be distinguished based on criteria appropriate to the environment in which the intrusion detection system operates.

Claims (31)

1. An ultra wideband sensor array, comprising:

a plurality of sensors, each sensor of said plurality of sensors comprising:

an ultra wideband radar; and

an ultra wideband radio, each ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors communicating with at least one other ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors to synchronize said plurality of sensors; and

a processor, said processor in communication with at least one ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors, said processor determining the relative positions of said plurality of sensors based upon ultra wideband position determination techniques, at least two of said plurality of sensors functioning as a bi-static radar.

2. The sensor array of claim 1 , wherein said ultra wideband radar and said ultra wideband radio are combined.

3. The sensor array of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of sensors comprises monostatic radar functionality.

4. The sensor array of claim 1 , wherein each ultra wideband radio of said plurality of said plurality of sensors communicates with said at least one other ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors using a wireless transmission medium.

5. The sensor array of claim 4 , wherein said wireless transmission medium comprises one of a bidirectional wireless link or a simplex wireless link.

6. The sensor array of claim 4 , wherein said wireless transmission medium comprises electromagnetic waves.

7. The sensor array of claim 6 , wherein said electromagnetic waves comprises ultra wideband signals.

8. The sensor array of claim 1 , wherein each ultra wideband radio of said plurality of said plurality of sensors communicates with said at least one other ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors using a wired transmission medium.

9. The sensor array of claim 8 , wherein said wired transmission medium comprises at least one of a cable, a coaxial cable, or an optical fiber.

10. The sensor array of claim 1 , wherein a first sensor of said plurality of sensors transmits an ultra wideband signal, said ultra wideband signal reflecting off an object as reflected signals, said reflected signals being received by at least two other sensors of said plurality of sensors.

11. A method for sensing using an ultra wideband sensor array, comprising the steps of:

a. synchronizing a plurality of sensors, each sensor of said plurality of sensors comprising:

an ultra wideband radar; and

an ultra wideband radio, each ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors communicating with at least one other ultra wideband radio of said plurality of sensors to synchronize said plurality of sensors;

b. determining the relative positions of said plurality of sensors based upon ultra wideband position determination techniques; and

c. transmitting an ultra wideband signal from a first sensor of said plurality of sensors, said ultra wideband signal reflecting off an object as reflected signals, said reflected signals being received by at least one other sensor of said plurality of sensors, said reflected signals corresponding to forward scattering data.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein said ultra wideband radar and said ultra wideband radio are combined.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising: receiving, by said first sensor, second reflected signals having reflected off said object, said second reflected signals corresponding to back scattering data.
