Abstract

A method of imaging, comprising: (a) providing an isotope at a low dosage in a body of a patient; (b) receiving radiation generated by said isotope from said body using a radiation camera; and (c) reconstructing a 3D distribution of said isotope from said received radiation, wherein the dosage is less than ⅓ of a standard dose set forth in Table 5.

Claims (81)

1. A method of functional imaging, comprising:

(a) administering a radiopharmaceutical selected from the group consisting of Tc-99m-sestamibi, Tc 99m Tetrofosmin and Tl-201-thallous chloride to a patient;

(b) imaging said patient using one or both of a low dose protocol in which dosage of said radiopharmaceutical is lower by at least a factor of 3 from standard dosage of said radiopharmaceutical set forth in Table 5A and a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 10 minutes,

wherein imaging is performed with a radiation camera comprising at least one collimator defining an angle from which the radiation camera detects radiation events and wherein the camera is configured to detect at least one out of 1500 photons emitted from the isotope in an imaged area.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said imaging comprises dynamic imaging of an organ of the patient.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said imaging comprises simultaneous imaging of at least one additional radiopharmaceutical in the patient.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said imaging is of a 3D distribution of the radiopharmaceutical.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein said providing comprises providing at a dose equivalent of 2.5 mrem or less per kg body weight.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said administered dosage is at most 10 mCi of Tc-99m.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said administered dosage is at most 1 mCi of Tl-201.

8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein acquisition time is five minutes or less.

9. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said dosage used is 1/10 or less of said standard dosage.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said dosage used is ⅕ or less of said standard dosage.

11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a low dose protocol in which dosage is lower by at least a factor of 3 from standard dosage set forth in Table 5.

12. A method according to claim 11 , wherein said isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical comprises Technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi and wherein standard dosage is 30 mCi for stress imaging.

13. A method according to claim 11 , wherein said isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical comprises Technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi and wherein standard dosage is 10 mCi for rest imaging.

14. A method according to claim 11 , wherein said isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical comprises Tl-201 and wherein administered dosage is no more than 1 mCi.

15. A method according to claim 1 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 10 minutes.

16. A method according to claim 15 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 6 minutes.

17. A method according to claim 15 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 5 minutes.

18. A method according to claim 15 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 4 minutes.

19. A method according to claim 15 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 2 minutes.

20. A method according to claim 15 , wherein imaging comprises imaging said patient using a fast protocol in which substantial acquisition time is shorter than 1 minute.

21. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said imaging comprises cardiac imaging.

22. A method of imaging, comprising:

(a) providing an isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical at a dosage in a body of a patient;

(b) receiving radiation generated by said radiopharmaceutical from said body using a radiation camera; and

(c) reconstructing a 3D distribution of said radiopharmaceutical from said received radiation,

wherein the dosage is less than ⅓ of a standard dose set forth in Table 5A, and

wherein the radiation camera comprises at least one collimator defining an angle from which the radiation camera detects radiation events and wherein the camera is configured to detect at least one out of 1500 photons emitted from the isotope in an imaged area.

23. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administering comprises providing a molecule labeled with a positron-emitting nuclide in a body; and wherein imaging comprises receiving radiation from said body using a non-coincident radiation camera; and

reconstructing a 3D distribution of said isotope from said received radiation.

24. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said isotope is selected from the group consisting of F-18, C-11, N-13, O-15, Rb-82, Cu-62, and Ga-68.

25. A method according to claim 24 , wherein F-18-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used as a substrate for hexokinase in glucose metabolism, for the study of glucose metabolism of cells including one or more of tumor, heart and brain cells.

26. A method according to claim 24 , wherein F-18-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is used for imaging of one or both of hypoxia and oxidative metabolism for radiotherapy treatment planning.

27. A method according to claim 26 , wherein C-11-Methionine is used to target amino acid synthesis, for imaging brain tumors.

28. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said imaging, comprises:

receiving radiation generated by said isotope from said body using a non-coincident radiation camera;

reconstructing a distribution of said isotope from said received radiation; and

investigating the biology of at least one molecular event in a living cell in vivo using said image.

29. A method according to claim 28 , wherein said reconstructing comprises reconstructing an image from an isotope concentration of less than 1E-10 Moles in 1 gr of tissue and using said image for a medical procedure.

30. A method according to claim 28 , wherein investigating comprises determining a level of one or more of gene expression, mRNA expression and protein expression.

31. A method of imaging according to claim 22 , wherein said isotope is a beta emitting isotope; and wherein said receiving comprises receiving radiation generated by said beta emissions from said body using a non-coincident radiation camera.

32. A method according to claim 31 , wherein said isotope is selected from a group consisting of Sm-153, I-131, Cu-67, Lu-177, and Sn-117m.

33. A method according to claim 22 , wherein the dosage is less than 1/10 of a standard dose set forth in Table 5.

34. A method according to claim 22 , wherein the receiving comprises receiving for acquiring data of at least the same quality and type as a standard protocol for the standard dose.

35. A method of imaging according to claim 22 , wherein providing an isotope comprises providing an isotope with a gamma decay scheme of low abundance in a body; and wherein receiving comprises receiving radiation generated by said isotope from said body using a non-coincident radiation camera.

36. A method according to claim 35 , wherein said abundance is about or less than about 10%.

37. A method according to claim 35 , wherein said isotopes are selected from a group consisting of Cu-67, Lu-177 and Sm-153.

38. A method of imaging according to claim 22 , wherein providing comprises providing an isotope with a long half-life of greater than 8 days in a body; and wherein receiving comprises receiving radiation generated by said isotope from said body using a non-coincident radiation camera.

39. A method according to claim 38 , wherein said isotope is selected from a group consisting of I-131 and Sn-117m.

40. A method of imaging according to claim 22 , wherein said camera comprising two or more detecting modules, wherein the position of at least two of said detecting modules can be adjusted relative to each other; and

wherein the method further comprises:

(d) identifying a body contour adjacent to a target area of interest;

(e) adjusting the position of said at least two detecting modules, thereby conforming said camera to said contour, to be within 5 centimeters of said body.

41. A method according to claim 40 , comprising selecting at least one view according to which the camera is adjusted.

42. A method according to claim 40 , wherein said camera includes an actuator for movement thereof.

43. A method according to claim 40 , wherein said camera includes an actuator for said conforming.

44. A method according to claim 40 , wherein said camera includes a plurality of detectors that are moved relative to each other for said regulating.

45. A method according to claim 22 , wherein imaging comprises acquiring an image and using said image for identifying a cancerous growth.

46. A method according to claim 22 , wherein imaging comprises acquiring an image suitable for identifying weakened, diseased or ischemic tissue.

47. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 20 mCi for breast imaging.

48. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 20 mCi for cardiac stress imaging.

49. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 20 mCi for bone imaging.

50. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 10 mCi for renal imaging, hepatobiliary imaging or infection imaging.

51. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 20 mCi for cerebral imaging.

52. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 3 mCi for tumor imaging.

53. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 6 mCi for neuroendocrine tumor imaging.

54. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 5 mCi for prostate metastasis imaging.

55. A method according to claim 22 wherein said providing comprises providing at a dose equivalent of 2.5 mrem or less per kg body weight and wherein said imaging is non-coincidence imaging.

56. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said standard dosage is 20 mCi of Tc-99m for cardiac stress imaging.

57. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is less than 10 mCi.

58. A method according to claim 22 , wherein substantial acquisition time is five minutes or less.

59. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 10 mCi for a Tc-99m radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

60. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 5 mCi for a Tc-99m radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

61. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 1 mCi for a Tl-201 radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

62. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 2 mCi for a In-111 radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

63. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 5 mCi for a I-123 radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

64. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said administered dosage is no more than 5 mCi for a G-67 radiopharmaceutical and wherein said imaging is performed using a non-coincident camera.

65. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical comprises Technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi and wherein said standard dosage is 30 mCi for stress imaging.

66. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said isotope labeled radiopharmaceutical comprises Technetium Tc 99m Sestamibi and wherein said standard dosage is 10 mCi for rest imaging.
