Abstract

A method to help control the quality of printed three-dimensional objects is provided. The method may include dispensing building material in consecutive slices using a building material dispensing head which dispenses material in the printing X direction; and combining printing of two or more consecutive slices to provide high resolution printed layer in the non-printing Y direction, according to a high resolution pixel map.

Claims (12)

1. A method of printing three-dimensional objects wherein X, Y and Z each denote one of the three dimensions, the method comprising:

dispensing, in a printing direction X from a nozzle array, droplets of building material in consecutive slices to form layers of a three dimensional object using a combination of two or more slice pixel maps, wherein each slice pixel map includes pixels arranged in pixel rows along the printing direction X and wherein the size of a pixel is smaller than the diameter of the droplets, by:

printing a first slice according to pixel rows of a corresponding to a first group of pixel rows of a combined pixel map combining two or more slice pixel maps;

shifting the nozzle array in a non-printing direction Y by a distance smaller than the diameter of the droplets according to a required resolution of the combined pixel map; and

printing a second consecutive slice above the first slice in a Z direction according to pixel rows of a second slice pixel map corresponding to a second different group of pixel rows of the combined pixel map,

wherein the first group of pixel rows of the combined pixel map are interlaced with the second group of pixel rows when the second slice is projected, downwards in the Z direction, on the first slice and a distance in the Y direction between a pixel row of the first slice and a pixel row of the second slice is smaller than the droplet diameter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distance between adjacent pixel rows in each of said slices is not smaller than the droplet diameter.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein if a required resolution is equal to 2 divided by the droplet diameter, the first slice pixel map includes every odd row of the combined pixel map and the second slice pixel map includes every even row of the combined pixel map.

The method of claim 1 , wherein if a required resolution is equal to 3 divided by the droplet diameter, for each one of the slices, the rows associated with the combined pixel map are divided into adjacent triplets of rows where a first group includes every first row in a triplet, a second group includes every second row in the triplet, and a third group includes every third row in the triplet and the method further comprising:

shifting the nozzle array in the non-printing direction Y; and

printing a third consecutive slice above the second slice in the Z direction according to pixel rows associated with the third group.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein odd-numbered pixels are printed in the first slice and even-numbered pixels are printed in the second consecutive slice.
