Abstract

An optical pattern generator includes one or more multi-faceted rotating optical elements that introduce an offset that is rotation insensitive. The component that generates the offset is rotationally symmetric around the rotational axis of the optical element. Thus, as the optical element rotates, the effect of the offset component does not change. In addition, rotating optical elements may be designed to counteract unwanted optical effects of each other.

Claims (37)

1. An optical pattern generator for use with an optical source for treating skin, the optical pattern generator comprising:

a rotating optical element that contains a plurality of facets, the rotating optical element continually rotating around a rotational axis in a single direction that is either clockwise or counterclockwise, the facets rotating through an incident optical beam as the optical element rotates around the rotational axis, and different facets deflecting the incident optical beam in different directions as the facets rotate through the optical beam; and

a lens arrangement comprising at least one lens positioned downstream from the rotating optical element,

wherein different facets deflect the incident optical beam in different directions as the facets rotate through the optical beam to form discrete separated treatment zones on the skin, and the treatment zones form a pattern of optical energy on a targeted portion of skin sufficient to treat the skin.

2. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the different directions comprise different offset directions, each of the offset directions having a component that is directed along a radial direction of the rotating optical element.

3. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein rotation of the facets through the optical beam scans the optical beam to the at least one lens of the lens arrangement in sequence to form a pattern of discrete spots as the treatment zones on the targeted portion of skin.

4. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein rotation of the facets through the optical beam scans the optical beam to the at least one lens of the lens arrangement not in sequence to form a pattern of discrete spots as the treatment zones on the targeted portion of skin.

5. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of facets deflect the optical beam along the radial direction of the rotating optical element.

6. The optical pattern generator of claim 2 , wherein, for one or more of the plurality of facets, the facet is optically rotationally symmetric around a symmetry axis that is parallel to and offset from the rotational axis of the rotational element.

7. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the incident optical beam is collimated.

8. The optical pattern generator of claim 7 , further comprising:

beam adapting optics positioned upstream of the rotating optical element, the beam adapting optics configured to collimate the optical beam.

9. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a laser source configured to generate the optical beam.

10. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the lens arrangement comprises at least two lenses, and rotation of the facets through the optical beam scans the optical beam to the at least two lenses of the lens array in sequence to form a pattern of discrete spots on the targeted portion of skin.

11. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of facets are optically rotationally symmetric.

12. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of facets are optically rotationally symmetric around the rotational axis.

13. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein, for one or more of the plurality of facets, the facet is optically rotationally symmetric around a symmetry axis that is parallel to and offset from the rotational axis of the rotational element.

14. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the facets are reflective such that the optical beam reflects off the facets.

15. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the facets are transmissive such that the optical beam is refracted when transmitted through the facets.

16. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the treatment zones are spots or scan lines.

17. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein each facet is configured to create the treatment zones as discrete treatment spots at different locations on the targeted portion of skin such that the optical beam jumps to each successive location.

18. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the rotating optical element is configured to rotate at a speed up to 10,000 rpm.

19. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the treatment zones are separated from one another by untreated zones of the skin.

20. The optical pattern generator of claim 1 , wherein the lens arrangement comprises a plurality of lenses, and the different facets deflect the incident optical beam in different directions on the plurality of lenses in the lens array to form the discrete separated treatment zones.

21. A method for generating an optical pattern on skin, the method comprising:

generating an optical beam;

continually rotating a rotating optical element around a rotational axis in a single direction that is either clockwise or counterclockwise, the rotating element containing a plurality of facets; and

directing the optical beam to the rotating optical element so that the facets rotate through the optical beam as the optical element rotates around the rotational axis;

wherein, as the facets rotate through the optical beam, different facets deflect the incident optical beam in different directions to different locations on the skin to form discrete separated treatment zones on the skin, and the treatment zones form a pattern of optical energy on a targeted portion of skin sufficient to treat the skin.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the facets are reflective such that the optical beam reflects off the facets.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the facets are transmissive such that the optical beam is refracted when transmitted through the facets.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein each facet is configured to create the treatment zones as discrete treatment spots at different locations on the targeted portion of skin such that the optical beam jumps to each successive location.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the treatment zones are separated from one another by untreated zones of skin.

26. An optical pattern generator for treating skin, the optical pattern generator comprising:

a rotating optical element that contains a plurality of facets, the rotating optical element continually rotating around a rotational axis in a single direction that is either clockwise or counterclockwise, the facets rotating through an incident optical beam as the optical element rotates around the rotational axis, different facets deflecting the incident optical beam in different offset directions as the facets rotate through the optical beam, and each of the offset directions having a component that is directed along a radial direction of the rotating optical element; and
