Abstract

An automated banking machine operated responsive to data included on user cards includes a deposit accepting device. The deposit accepting device is operative to receive a stack of sheets and to separate each sheet from the stack through operation of a picker. Each sheet is aligned with the sheet path and analyzed by analysis devices including at least one magnetic read head, an imager and/or a validation device. Sheets determined not to have at least one property of a genuine sheet are returned to a user of the machine. Sheets determined to have at least one property of genuine sheets are processed and stored in the machine.

Claims (51)

1. A method comprising:

(a) reading data from a card presented by a user, through operation of a card reader in an automated banking machine;

(b) operating the machine to determine that the data read in (a) corresponds to stored data associated with an authorized machine user;

(c) receiving a stack of sheets from the authorized user in a sheet access area of a deposit accepting device of the machine, wherein a divider plate extends in the sheet access area, wherein the stack is received on a first side of the divider plate;

(d) determining at least one property of each sheet received in (c) through operation of at least one sheet evaluation device of the machine;

(e) causing all of the sheets determined in (d) to be stored together in a first sheet storage and retrieval device of the machine;

(f) moving the sheets stored in (e) in the machine toward the sheet access area;

(g) selectively diverting sheets moved in (f) to a second sheet storage and retrieval device, responsive at least in part to the at least one property of the respective sheet determined in (d); and

(h) moving the sheets not diverted in (g) to the sheet access area on a second side of the divider plate opposed of the first side.

2. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (c), separating each sheet from the stack through operation of a picker.

3. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(j) subsequent to (g), moving at least one sheet from the second sheet storage and retrieval device to at least one storage area in the housing of the machine.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein (e) includes storing the sheets on a first belt recycler.

5. The method according to claim 4 wherein (g) includes storing sheets on a second belt recycler.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein (d) includes reading indicia from each sheet using a magnetic read head.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein (d) includes imaging each sheet.

8. The method according to claim 1

wherein (h) includes making the sheets not diverted in (g) accessible to the user in the sheet access area.

9. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(i) dispensing cash to the user from the machine.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (h) the sheets on the second side are arranged in a return stack, and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (h), separating at least one sheet from the return stack through operation of a picker in the machine.

11. The method according to claim 10 and further comprising:

(j) subsequent to (i), storing at least one sheet picked in (i) in a storage location in the machine other than the first sheet storage and retrieval device or the second sheet storage and retrieval device.

12. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (c) and prior to (d), separating at least one sheet from the stack received on the first side through operation of a picker in the machine.

13. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(i) providing the authorized user with a monetary value corresponding to sheets diverted to the second sheet storage and retrieval device in (g).

14. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine to cause at least one sheet evaluation device of the machine to evaluate deposit acceptability for each of a plurality of sheets individually received from a stack of sheets provided to a sheet access area of the machine by an authorized user of the machine;

(b) operating the machine to individually store the sheets evaluated in (a) in a first sheet storage and retrieval device in the machine, causing all of the plurality of sheets to be stored together in the first sheet storage and retrieval device regardless of their deposit acceptability;

(c) operating the machine to individually remove from the first sheet storage and retrieval device, all of the sheets stored therein in (b); and

(d) operating the machine to selectively divert sheets removed in (c), wherein the diverting causes

all removed sheets evaluated by the machine to be unacceptable for deposit, to be returned to the sheet access area, and

all removed sheets evaluated by the machine to be acceptable for deposit, to be directed to a second sheet storage and retrieval device in the machine,

wherein the second sheet storage and retrieval device differs from the first sheet storage and retrieval device.

15. The method according to claim 14

wherein the first sheet storage and retrieval device comprises a first belt recycler, wherein (b) includes storing the sheets on the first belt recycler,

wherein the second sheet storage and retrieval device comprises a second belt recycler, wherein (c) includes storing the acceptable sheets on the second belt recycler.

16. The method according to claim 14 and further comprising:

(e) prior to (d), moving acceptable and unacceptable sheets removed in (c) in a path toward the sheet access area;

wherein (d) includes diverting the acceptable sheets moving in (e) from the path into the second sheet storage and retrieval device.

17. The method according to claim 14 wherein (b) causes the first sheet storage and retrieval device to simultaneously contain acceptable and unacceptable sheets.

18. At least one article including computer executable instructions operative to cause at least one computer in an automated banking machine including a sheet access area, at least one sheet evaluation device, a first sheet storage and retrieval device, and a second sheet storage and retrieval device, to carry out a method comprising:

(a) operating the machine to cause the at least one sheet evaluation device to evaluate deposit acceptability for each of a plurality of sheets individually received from a stack of sheets provided to the sheet access area of the machine by an authorized user of the machine;

(b) operating the machine to individually store the sheets evaluated in (a) in the first sheet storage and retrieval device, causing all of the plurality of sheets to be stored together in the first sheet storage and retrieval device regardless of their deposit acceptability;

(c) operating the machine to individually remove from the first sheet storage and retrieval device, all of the sheets stored therein in (b); and

(d) operating the machine to selectively divert sheets removed in (c), wherein the diverting causes

all removed sheets evaluated by the machine to be unacceptable for deposit, to be returned to the sheet access area, and

all removed sheets evaluated by the machine to be acceptable for deposit, to be directed to the second sheet storage and retrieval device in the machine.
