Abstract

The erosion-prone sections of the tubes in a circulating fluidized bed boiler are provided with a locally thickened sidewall without forming discontinuities on the outer surface of the tubes. This can be accomplished, for example, by replacing the erosion prone portion of the tube with a section having a smaller inside diameter, but the same outside diameter, or by replacing the erosion prone portion of the tube with a section having a thicker sidewall, but the same inside diameter, and smoothing over the outside discontinuity with an alloy coating. A useful alloy coating is also disclosed which can be used for this and other applications.

Claims (21)

1. A method to slow the process of erosion and corrosion of a plurality of parallel tubes substantially vertically positioned in a tube wall at an interface with a refractory ledge of a refractory wall in a fluidized bed boiler, said method comprising:

forming an erosion reducing recess in a fire side surface of at least one tube at a section of the at least one tube located proximate the refractory ledge;

providing an erosion and corrosion resistant coating on a portion of the fire side surface of the at least one tube;

extending the coating from the section proximate the refractory ledge laterally to each side of the at least one tube and longitudinally along the at least one tube to a distance of at least 12 inches from the refractory ledge and approximating an area where erosion or corrosion is expected to occur, the coating increasing a sidewall thickness of the at least one tube by at least 0.100 inches at the section proximate the refractory ledge;

smoothly and gradually tapering a thickness of the coating in a direction away from the refractory ledge to nil over a distance of at least 12 inches from the refractory ledge; and

maintaining at least a portion of the recess after the coating is applied thereto.

2. A method as in claim 1 wherein the coating of increased sidewall thickness section is provided by spray technique, said coating having a maximum thickness in the range of 0.060 to 0.200 inches.

3. A method as in claim 1 wherein the maximum thickness is on a fire side of the tube, directly facing an erosive environment in the fluidized bed boiler.

4. A method as in claim 1 wherein the boiler tubes are formed from steel and the coating is applied by providing a wire having a metallic outer sheath and a powdered inner core, wherein the inner core comprises at least about 28% by weight of boron sourced from pure boron or a compound of boron and chrome sourced from pure chrome or a compound of chrome in an amount between about 67% and about 185% by weight of the amount of the boron;

melting the wire using an electric arc heat source to form a melt;

atomizing and spraying the melt onto the tubes by compressed gas;

wherein the composite wire is selected to form a coating on the substrate comprising

the metal of the sheath, chrome, and boron, and permitting the coating to solidify.

5. The method as in claim 1 wherein, the at least one tube has an inside diameter in a section of the at least one tube where the recess is located, the inside diameter being less than another inside diameter of other portions of the at least one tube.

6. A method to slow the process of erosion and corrosion in tubes in a fluidized bed boiler at a refractory discontinuity, said method comprising

identifying where areas of erosion or corrosion is expected to occur on the tubes;

forming an erosion reducing recess in at least one tube in the areas where erosion or corrosion is expected to occur;

spraying an erosion and corrosion resistant coating on the areas where erosion or corrosion is expected to occur, the coating resulting in an increased sidewall thickness of at least 0.100 inches,

smoothly and gradually tapering a thickness of the coating in a direction away from the refractory ledge to nil over a distance of at least 12 inches from the refractory ledge; and

maintaining at least a portion of the recess after the coating is applied thereto.

7. The method as in claim 6 wherein, the at least one tube has an inside diameter in a section of the at least one tube where the recess is located, the inside diameter being less than another inside diameter of other portions of the at least one tube.
