Abstract

An automated transaction machine can operate to carry out a financial transaction for a machine user responsive to communication with a financial transaction host computer. The machine includes a card reader that can read a user identifier from a magnetic stripe of a user card. The machine sends the read user identifier to a remote marketing computer. The marketing computer uses a user identifier to determine the next marketing presentation to be presented to a machine user corresponding to the user identifier. Responsive to a message received from the marketing computer, the machine operates to display the determined next marketing presentation to the machine user. A marketing campaign includes a sequence of presentations to be output in a predetermined order to a machine user. Machine communication with the remote marketing message computer is independent of machine communication with the transaction host computer.

at least one communication device,

at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor is in operative connection with the at least one input device, the at least one output device, the cash dispenser, and the at least one communication device,

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause card data read by the at least one card reader to be communicated from the machine to a first remote computer and to a second remote computer different from and not in operative connection with the first remote computer,

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the machine to carry out a cash dispensing transaction including operation of the cash dispenser responsive to at least one communication received by the machine from the second remote computer responsive to communicating the card data to the second remote computer.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1

wherein the at least one processor is operative to provide at least one output from the at least one output device of the machine, responsive to at least one communication received by the machine from the first remote computer.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one card reader is operative to read card data included in a magnetic stripe of a user card.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause at least one message including data corresponding to the card data and a request to conduct a cash dispensing transaction to be communicated to the second remote computer.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one input device is operative to receive inputs corresponding to a requested transaction type, wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause data corresponding to the requested transaction type to be communicated to the second remote computer and not the first remote computer.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one processor includes a timing function, and wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to the timing function to determine a time since the card data read by the at least one card reader was communicated from the machine to the first remote computer, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the machine to take at least one action responsive to the time having elapsed without machine receiving at least one responsive communication from the first remote computer.

7. An automated banking system controlled responsive to data bearing records comprising:

a financial transaction computer,

an automated banking machine,

wherein the machine is remotely located from the financial transaction computer,

wherein the machine is operative to conduct a financial transaction through communication with the financial transaction computer,

wherein the machine includes at least one data bearing record reader device,

at least one output device,

wherein the at least one output device includes a display device,

a determining computer,

wherein the determining computer is remotely located from the machine and the financial transaction computer,

wherein the machine is operative to communicate with the determining computer,

wherein the machine is operative to conduct a financial transaction through communication with the financial transaction computer independent of communication with the determining computer,

wherein prior to conclusion of a first financial transaction at the machine:

the at least one data bearing record reader device is operative to acquire identifying data from a magnetic stripe on a data bearing record presented by a first machine user during the first financial transaction,

the machine is operative to send to the determining computer, a request message including identity data corresponding to the acquired identifying data,

the determining computer is operative to receive the request message sent from the machine, determine a response message responsive to receiving the identity data, and send the response message to the machine,

the machine is operative to receive the response message sent from the determining computer and to present to the first machine user at least one output corresponding to the response message through the at least one output device.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the at least one data bearing record reader comprises a card reader device, wherein the identity data corresponds to user identifying data read by the card reader device from a magnetic stripe on a user card.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the determining computer is operative to determine a marketing presentation to be output to the first machine user responsive to receiving the identity data, wherein the response message indicates the marketing presentation.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the determining computer is operative to determine a next marketing presentation in a predetermined sequence of marketing presentations to be output to the first machine user responsive to receiving the identity data, wherein the response message indicates the next marketing presentation.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the determining computer comprises a marketing computer, wherein the marketing computer is operative to determine a next marketing presentation not yet presented to the first machine user.

12. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the automated banking machine comprises an ATM, wherein the ATM includes a cash dispenser, and wherein the determining computer is not in operative connection with the financial transaction computer.

13. An automated banking apparatus controlled responsive to data bearing records, comprising:

a determining computer operative to communicate with each of a plurality of automated banking machines remotely located from the determining computer,

wherein from each machine, the determining computer is operative to receive identifying data corresponding to a data bearing record including a magnetic stripe presented by a current machine user attempting to carry out a financial transaction that involves machine communication with a financial transaction host computer remotely located from the machines and the determining computer and not in operative connection with the determining computer,

wherein the determining computer is operative to make a machine-affecting determination based on received identifying data,
