Static phase mask for high-order spectral phase control in a hybrid chirped pulse amplifier system
View Patent ↗A chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system comprises an optical pulse stretcher and an optical pulse compressor that are mismatched in that the optical pulse compressor includes a bulk optical grating while the optical pulse stretcher does not. High order dispersion compensation is provided by an optical phase mask disposed within the optical pulse compressor.
1. A system comprising:
an optical amplifier configured to optically amplify a chirped optical pulse; and
an optical pulse compressor configured to compress the optically amplified chirped optical pulse, the optical pulse compressor including
a bulk optical grating configured to spatially disperse the optically amplified chirped optical pulse into a spatially dispersed optical pulse and direct the spatially dispersed optical pulse in a first direction along a first path, and
an optical phase mask configured to perform dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse by adjusting an optical phase.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask is configured to perform a fourth order dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask is incorporated into a glass substrate.
4. The system of claim 1 wherein the optical phase mask comprises a deformable mirror.
5. A system comprising:
an optical amplifier configured to optically amplify a chirped optical pulse; and
an optical pulse compressor configured to compress the optically amplified chirped optical pulse, the optical pulse compressor including
a bulk optical grating configured to spatially disperse the optically amplified chirped optical pulse into a spatially dispersed optical pulse and direct the spatially dispersed optical pulse in a first direction along a first path, and
an optical phase mask configured to perform greater than 15 radians of dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse by adjusting an optical phase.
6. The system of claim 5 wherein the optical phase mask is configured to perform between 15 and 30 radians of dispersion compensation d.
7. The system of claim 5 wherein the optical amplifier comprises an optical fiber amplifier.

The system of claim 5 wherein the optical phase mask is one of an array of optical phase masks disposed on a common substrate, the optical pulse compressor configured to select the optical phase mask by positionally adjusting the array relative to the first path of the spatially dispersed optical pulses.
9. A method comprising:
optically amplifying a chirped optical pulse;
spatially dispersing the optically amplified chirped optical pulse into a spatially dispersed optical pulse using a bulk optical grating within an optical pulse compressor;
performing dispersion compensation of the spatially dispersed optical pulse using an optical phase mask within the optical pulse compressor; and
temporally compressing the dispersion compensated spatially dispersed optical pulse using the optical pulse compressor.
10. The method of claim 9 wherein performing dispersion compensation further includes performing a fourth order dispersion compensation.
