Abstract

Modular connectors are provided that have a modular receptacle connector assembly matable with a modular plug connector assembly for connecting AC or DC power connectors and electrical signals including board-to-board and wire-to-board connection. Provided is a “pass through” modular component to facilitate connection and disconnection of only the power supply for service without disconnecting the entire system. The wire connector also may load to the main housing thus obviating the need for a panel mount. Also provided is a one-unit modular connector system with either a coplanar or a right-angle design. Furthermore, multiple AC and/or DC power supplies can be provided that utilize minimum board space.

Claims (16)

1. A modular connector system that comprises:

a first modular connector configured to be mounted on a circuit board and, in operation, to engage with another connector in a direction parallel to the circuit board;

a second modular connector integral with the first modular connector and having a first side and a second side opposing the first side, the second modular connector having a pass-through opening extending from the first side to the second side, wherein the pass-through opening is configured to allow insertion from the first side to the second side in a direction parallel to the circuit board; and

a removably insertable modular connector that is configured to be connected to power wiring and is inserted in the pass-through opening.

2. The modular connector system of claim 1 , wherein the second modular connector is configured to extend, in operation, over an edge of the circuit board on which the first modular connector is mounted.

3. The modular connector system of claim 1 , wherein the insertable modular connector is selected from the group of a plug connector and a receptacle connector.

4. The modular connector system of claim 1 , further comprising a circuit board supporting the first modular connector, wherein the pass-through opening of the second modular connector provides is orientated so as to allow insertion in a direction that is parallel with a surface formed by the circuit board.

5. A modular connector system that comprises:

a circuit board with a surface;

a first modular connector supported by the circuit board and configured, in operation, to engage with another connector in a direction parallel to the circuit board;

a second modular connector integral with the first modular connector and having a first side and a second side, the second modular connector having a pass-through opening extending from the first side to the second side, wherein the pass-through opening is configured to allow insertion from the first side to the second side in a direction parallel to the circuit board; and

a removably insertable modular connector that is configured to be connected to power wiring and is inserted in the pass-through opening, wherein the pass-through opening of the second modular connector provides is orientated so as to allow insertion in a direction that is parallel with the surface, wherein the second modular connector extends in a cantilevered manner past an edge of the circuit board.

6. The modular connector system of claim 1 , further comprising a releasable latch for releasably locking together the insertable module and the second modular connector.

7. The modular connector system of claim 6 , wherein the modular connector system includes a mounting side and an opposing top side and the releasable latch is mounted on the top side.

8. The modular connector system of claim 7 , wherein said releasable latch is supported by the insertable module, and the second modular connector includes a locking member, and the releasable latch and locking member are configured to selectively engage and disengage each other.

9. The modular connector system of claim 8 , wherein the-releasable latch comprises a locking cantilevered beam, a releasing cantilevered beam and a fulcrum protrusion attaching the releasable latch to the insertable modular connector.
