Obesity treatment system including inflatable balloon structures with micropores for transport of liquid
View Patent ↗An obesity treatment system has a first treatment region sized and configured for deployment in a duodenum and a second treatment region sized and configured for deployment in a stomach. The first and second treatment regions are spaced apart a distance sized and configured to permit simultaneous deployment of the first treatment region in the duodenum and deployment of the second treatment region in the stomach. The first and second treatment regions each carry at least one electrode, which can deliver energy to ablate tissue in and the duodenum.
1. An obesity treatment system comprising:
a catheter having a distal end region, a first treatment region comprising an elongated inflatable balloon structure on the distal end region sized and shaped to be approximately three times as long as it is wide for deployment in a duodenum, a second treatment region comprising a second inflatable balloon structure having a spherical side on the distal end region proximal to the first treatment region, the second inflatable balloon structure being sized and shaped for deployment in a stomach, each of the elongated and second inflatable balloon structures having a widest portion when fully inflated, the widest portion of the second inflatable balloon being about three times wider that the widest portion of the elongated inflatable balloon structure, and a spacing region separating the first treatment region from the second treatment region by a distance sized and configured to permit simultaneous deployment of the first treatment region in the duodenum and deployment of the second treatment region in the stomach, the first and second treatment regions each including at least one electrode, at least one of the elongated and second inflatable balloon structures including micropores for transport of liquid,
a source of liquid,
a coupling connecting the source of liquid to the elongated and second inflatable balloon structures to convey liquid into the elongated and second inflatable balloon structures and inflate the elongated and second inflatable balloon structures to bring the electrodes into contact with tissue in the duodenum and the stomach, the micropores further transporting liquid into contact with tissue,
a source of tissue ablation energy,
a second coupling connecting the at least one electrode on each of the first and second treatment regions to the source of tissue ablation energy, and
a controller to deliver energy from the source of tissue ablation energy to the electrodes on the first and second treatment regions to ablate tissue in the duodenum and the stomach.
2. A system according to claim 1
wherein the source of tissue ablation energy comprises a source of radio frequency energy.
3. A system according to claim 1
wherein the controller delivers energy simultaneously to the electrodes on the first and second treatment regions to simultaneously ablate tissue in the stomach and the duodenum.
