Abstract

For use in a system having a master device and slave devices (e.g., an electronic blasting system) and utilizing an automatic detection process that causes any slave devices that have not previously been identified to the master device to identify themselves to the master device, an enhancement to the detection process employs at least a second discriminator to detect superimposed responses from simultaneously responding slave devices, and a “deconvolution” algorithm in order to ascertain their identities.

Claims (29)

1. For use in an electronic blasting system having a master device and electronic detonators and utilizing a detection process that causes any electronic detonators that have not previously been identified to the master device to identify themselves to the master device, a method for resolving simultaneous responses from multiple electronic detonators comprising the following steps performed by the master device:

a. receiving simultaneous responses from multiple electronic detonators with at least two discriminators;

b. processing data from said at least two discriminators to resolve said simultaneous responses into known bits and ambiguous bits;

c. performing an algorithm to resolve said ambiguous bits; and

d. combining the results of steps b and c to ascertain the respective identifications of said simultaneously responding multiple electronic detonators.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said electronic detonators have factory-preset delay times.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of said master device sending a verification command on the system based on one or more identifications resolved from step d.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said simultaneous responses are from no more than two electronic detonators, and said at least two discriminators comprise two discriminators.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein any known bit resolved in step b comprises a high value from both electronic detonators or a low value from both electronic detonators.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said low values from both electronic detonators are signified by a low reading by a first of said two discriminators and said high values from both electronic detonators are signified by a high reading by a second of said two discriminators.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said algorithm of step c includes the calculation of possible values corresponding to candidate electronic detonator identifications.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said possible values comprise CRC values corresponding to candidate electronic detonator identifications.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said algorithm of step c includes the calculation of possible values corresponding to candidate electronic device identifications.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising the step of said master device sending a verification command on the system based on one or more identifications resolved from step d.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein said possible values comprise CRC values corresponding to candidate electronic detonator identifications.

12. A master device for use with an electronic blasting system that includes multiple electronic detonators and a detection process that causes any electronic detonators that have not previously been identified to the master device to identify themselves to the master device, the master device being capable of resolving simultaneous responses from at least two electronic detonators and comprising:

a. at least two discriminators;

b. means for processing data received from said at least two discriminators so as to resolve simultaneous responses from at least two electronic detonators into known bits and ambiguous bits;

c. means for performing an algorithm to resolve said ambiguous bits; and

d. means for ascertaining, using said known bits and said resolved ambiguous bits, the respective identifications of said at least two simultaneously responding electronic detonators.

The master device of claim 12 , wherein said simultaneous responses are from no more than two electronic detonators, wherein said at least two discriminators comprise two discriminators, wherein said means for processing data further resolves said known bits into high values received from both electronic detonators and low values received from both electronic detonators, and wherein said low values from both electronic detonators are signified by a low reading by a first of said two discriminators and said high values from both electronic detonators are signified by a high reading by a second of said two discriminators.

14. The master device of claim 13 , wherein said means for performing an algorithm calculates possible values corresponding to candidate electronic detonator identifications.

15. The master device of claim 12 , wherein said electronic detonators have factory-preset delay times.

16. The master device of claim 15 , wherein said master device is a logger.

17. An electronic blasting system having a master device and electronic detonators, comprising:

a. means for causing any electronic detonators that have not previously been identified to the master device to identify themselves to the master device; and

b. means for resolving any responses received simultaneously by the master device from multiple electronic detonators.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein said electronic detonators have factory-preset delay times.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein said master device is a logger.
