Abstract

A method, composition and system respond to ionizing radiation to adjust biological activity. In some approaches the ionizing radiation is X-ray or extreme ultraviolet radiation that produces luminescent responses that induce biologically active responses.

Claims (25)

1. A method, comprising:

delivering to least one region a first bound composition, the first bound composition including:

a luminescent material; and

a first biotargeting agent, the first biotargeting agent conveying a first selective biological affinity to the first composition;

delivering to the at least one region a second bound composition different from the first bound composition, the second bound composition including:

a photosensitive biologically active material; and

a second biotargeting agent, the second biotargeting agent conveying a second selective biological affinity to the second composition; and

irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation whereby:

the luminescent material responds to the ionizing radiation to produce optical energy; and

the photosensitive biologically active material responds to the produced optical energy to change a biological activity of the photosensitive biologically active material.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first selective biological affinity and the second selective biological affinity are substantially overlapping.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first biotargeting agent is identical to the second biotargeting agent.

4. A method, comprising:

delivering to least one region a first bound composition, the first bound composition including:

a luminescent material; and

a first binding partner selected from a pair of binding partners;

delivering to the at least one region a second bound composition different from the first bound composition, the second bound composition including:

a photosensitive biologically active material; and

a second binding partner selected from the pair of binding partners; and

irradiating at least a portion of the at least one region with ionizing radiation whereby:

the luminescent material responds to the ionizing radiation to produce optical energy; and

the photosensitive biologically active material responds to the produced optical energy to change a biological activity of the photosensitive biologically active material.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pair of binding partners is biotin and avidin or biotin and streptavadin.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pair of binding partners is an immunogen and a corresponding anti-immunogen.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pair of binding partners is a protein and a corresponding protein ligand.
