Abstract

Exemplary systems and methods relating to water treatment are described. One implementation filters water through a moving bed media filter sufficient to decrease the water's turbidity. This implementation simultaneously disinfects the filtered water and at least a portion of the moving bed media filter with ultra violet (UV) energy.

Claims (12)

1. A method, comprising:

introducing at least one metal salt and at least one oxidizer into contaminated water;

filtering the contaminated water through a moving media bed effective that filtered water emerges from the media bed containing excess metal salt and excess oxidizer and less contaminants, wherein the filtering comprises:

flowing the water in a direction that is generally opposite to movement of media in the media bed, and

recycling cleaned media back onto the media bed so that the filtered water emerges from the cleaned media; and,

exposing the filtered water to electromagnetic energy, wherein the exposing is sufficient to convert at least some of the excess oxidizer to one or more of: superoxide, hydroxyl radicals, and peroxide and to at least partially disinfect the filtered water, and wherein the exposing is sufficient to disinfect recycled cleaned media as the recycled cleaned media moves toward the media bed.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the introducing comprises introducing the at least one metal salt and the at least one oxidizer into the contaminated water before the contaminated water reaches the media bed.

3. A system, comprising:

a vessel to contain a media bed such that contaminated fluid is introduced into the media bed and filtered fluid emerges from the media bed; and,

an ultra violet (UV) energy source positioned proximate the vessel for emitting UV energy into the filtered fluid to at least partially disinfect the filtered fluid

wherein the vessel further includes a washbox that functions to clean media withdrawn from the media bed and to recycle the cleaned media back to the media bed and wherein the cleaned media is exposed to the UV energy as the cleaned media falls from the washbox through the filtered fluid toward the media bed.

4. The system of claim 3 further comprising a mechanism for introducing ozone into the contaminated fluid and wherein the UV energy decreases ozone concentrations in the filtered fluid.
