Abstract

Non-spherical particulates are useful in the stimulation of subterranean formations. A proppant pack composed of the non-spherical particulates exhibits greater porosity than a corresponding proppant pack composed of spherical particulates. Non-spherical particulates which are hollow and non-porous may further be at least partially filled with a chemical treatment agent including water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agents.

Claims (28)

1. A method of stimulating production of hydrocarbons in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation, comprising introducing into the wellbore a hollow, cylindrical proppant having an aspect ratio less than or equal to 5.0:1.0, wherein the inside of the proppant is at least partially filled with a water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agent.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the aspect ratio of the hollow, cylindrical proppant is less than or equal to 2.5:1.0.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is porous.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant consists of a pack and further wherein the porosity of the proppant pack is between from about 45 to about 70 percent.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is within an aggregate pack and further wherein the porosity of the aggregate pack is greater than the porosity of a corresponding aggregate pack having spherical proppant substituted for the hollow, cylindrical proppant of equivalent bulk volume.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant exhibits higher conductivity than a corresponding spherical proppant of equivalent bulk volume.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is a non-porous ceramic.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the internal volume of the hollow, cylindrical non-porous ceramic is up to about 70 percent by volume of the hollow, cylindrical proppant.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is non-porous.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical treatment agent is selected from the group consisting of scale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, paraffin inhibitors, demulsifiers, gas hydrate inhibitors, flocculating agents, asphaltene dispersants and mixtures thereof.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the chemical treatment agent is selected from the group consisting of scale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors and paraffin inhibitors.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the paraffin inhibitor is a wax crystal modifier.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is treated with a coating layer or glazing material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hollow, cylindrical proppant is treated with a coating layer which is permeable or semi-permeable to fluids produced from the wellbore.

15. A hollow, cylindrical non-porous proppant which is at least partially filled with a water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agent and wherein the aspect ratio of the hollow, cylindrical proppant is less than or equal to 2.5:1.

16. The hollow, cylindrical proppant of claim 15 , wherein the chemical treatment agent is selected from the group consisting of scale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors, paraffin inhibitors, demulsifiers, gas hydrate inhibitors, flocculating agents, asphaltene dispersants and mixtures thereof.

17. The hollow, cylindrical proppant of claim 16 , wherein the chemical treatment agent is selected from the group consisting of scale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors and paraffin inhibitors.

18. The hollow, cylindrical proppant of claim 17 , wherein the paraffin inhibitor is a wax crystal modifier.

19. The hollow, cylindrical proppant of claim 15 , wherein the proppant is a ceramic.

20. The hollow, cylindrical proppant of claim 15 , wherein the internal volume of the proppant is up to about 70 percent by volume of the hollow, cylindrical proppant.

21. A method of stimulating production of a hydrocarbons in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation comprising introducing into the wellbore a proppant pack of hollow, cylindrical particulates, the inside of the particulates being at least partially filled with a water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agent and wherein the porosity of the proppant pack of hollow, cylindrical particulates is greater than the porosity of a corresponding proppant pack of spherical particulates at equivalent bulk volume.

22. A method of stimulating production of a hydrocarbons in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation, comprising introducing into the wellbore a proppant pack of hollow, cylindrical particulates, wherein the proppant pack exhibits greater conductivity at closure stresses greater than about 1500 psi at a temperature greater than 150° F. than a corresponding proppant pack composed of spherical particulates of equivalent bulk volume.

23. A hollow, non-spherical, non-porous proppant which is at least partially filled with a water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agent, wherein the aspect ratio of the proppant is less than or equal to 2.5:1 and further wherein the non-spherical, non-porous proppant is elliptical or oblong shaped.

24. A method of stimulating production of hydrocarbons in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation, comprising introducing into the wellbore a hollow, non-spherical proppant which has an aspect ratio less than or equal to 5.0:1.0, wherein the inside of the hollow, non-spherical proppant is at least partially filled with a water-soluble or oil-soluble chemical treatment agent.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the non-spherical proppant is elliptical or oblong.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the hollow, non-spherical proppant is non-porous.
